It’s been a whirlwind year for 1000-Lb Sisters star Amy Slaton—and we’re only halfway through it. Between a surprise engagement, a camel encounter gone wrong, and an unexpected arrest, Amy’s story has taken some wild turns. Fans who’ve been following her journey since the show’s 2020 debut have seen her grow, change, and face more than a few hurdles. But even by Amy's standards, 2024 and 2025 have brought major drama.
Back in the day, Amy weighed 408 pounds and was determined to start a family. She’s since become a mother, lost significant weight, and navigated a tough divorce from ex-husband Michael Halterman. But this past year has included some of her most jaw-dropping moments yet, including an ER visit, legal troubles, and a skeleton-themed proposal. Here's how it all unfolded for the 1000-Lb Sisters star.
Amy gets engaged in a haunted house on 1000-Lb Sisters
Amy’s love life has made a comeback—and it’s been fully documented on 1000-Lb Sisters. In a May 2025 episode, Amy said yes to her boyfriend Brian after just five months of dating. The proposal? It happened inside a haunted house attraction called Henderson Haunts in Kentucky.
Brian popped the question while the couple wore matching skeleton T-shirts.
“But my love for you is insane. Will you marry me?”
he asked. Amy didn’t hesitate,
“You know I will.”
She later called it her best proposal yet. In a confessional, she proudly showed a silver band shaped like skeleton fingers forming a heart.
And apparently, this wasn’t his first try. Amy told People that two weeks into dating,
“Brian slipped a green apple Ring Pop on her finger while she was asleep.”
The engagement may have surprised viewers, but according to Brian, the couple had already talked about marriage, despite both having sworn they’d never go down that road again.
The camel bite incident lands Amy in the ER
The real chaos began in September 2024. Amy and Brian were enjoying a drive-through visit at the Tennessee Safari Park when things took a bizarre turn. While feeding animals from their van, with Amy’s sons Gage and Glenn in the back, a camel reached through the window and bit her.
Amy was first spit on.
“He leaked on me,”
she said in a video. As she leaned forward to clean her leg, the camel bit her arm.
“Ow, ow, ow, he got me good.”
According to police, a zoo employee called 911 and Amy was taken to the emergency room by stretcher. TMZ later reported that she had “nearly four centimeters of skin missing” from her arm, exposing raw tissue.
It wasn’t exactly what anyone expects during a day at a “family safe zoo,” but this is 1000-Lb Sisters—and normal is relative.
Amy and Brian get arrested after the zoo incident
Just hours after the camel bite, things escalated even further. Amy and Brian were both arrested at the scene. The charges?
“Illegal possession of Schedule I, illegal possession of Schedule VI, and two counts of child endangerment,”
according to the Crockett County Sheriff’s Department.
Us Weekly reported that when deputies arrived,
“They were immediately overtaken by suspicious odors coming from the guest’s vehicle.”
Authorities believed the couple had mushrooms and marijuana in their possession. Because Amy’s sons were in the car, the Department of Children and Family Services opened an investigation.
Amy didn’t fight the charges. According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, she pleaded guilty to “simple possession” and signed a plea deal. That agreement was submitted in December 2024 and officially resolved her case.
Her sentence? Eleven months and 29 days suspended, credited as time served. She also had to pay a $500 fine, complete an alcohol and drug assessment, and avoid all future contact with the Tennessee Safari Park. It’s a relatively light sentence, but a serious reminder that fame doesn’t mean immunity from legal trouble.
For 1000-Lb Sisters fans, the ordeal was a shocking twist in an already unpredictable season. But Amy’s ability to bounce back from the drama has been a consistent part of her story.
Custody of her sons temporarily changed
The legal fallout didn’t end with the plea deal. Because Amy’s sons were in the car during the arrest, she temporarily lost custody of Gage and Glenn. While rumors swirled that Tammy had taken them in, it was later confirmed that Amanda Halterman—another family member—was caring for the boys.
Amy once had primary custody, sharing time with her ex-husband Michael in a 70/30 split as seen in 1000-Lb Sisters. The arrest changed that, at least for a while. But recent photos suggest the boys might have returned to her care. One picture shows them smiling with breakfast sandwiches in hand.
“There so happy to go get there favorite breakfast food ham and cheese croissant,”
Amy wrote.
Despite her past struggles with postpartum depression and limited support from Michael, Amy has always described herself as a loving and committed mother on 1000-Lb Sisters. The custody scare appears to have served as a wake-up call, motivating her to refocus.
With everything that’s happened with Amy in 1000-Lb Sisters, she has shown she’s nothing if not resilient. Whether she's navigating love, motherhood, or a safari park disaster, she's taking it all in stride—and doing it on camera.
And with 1000-Lb Sisters continuing to air on TLC every Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EDT, it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the last of the twists and turns.
