The military-based comedy drama Boots is finally available to stream on Netflix, which follows the story of a young gay man’s experience in U.S. Marine Corps boot camp during the early 1990s. The series also took inspiration from Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, highlighting a time when being a gay man was strictly forbidden.
What makes the story engaging to watch is the mix of emotional drama and comedy, while also focusing on the friendships that are made while working as marine cops. As mentioned above, the story takes place during the early 1990s, right before the U.S. military put the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
So, it was the time when being homosexual was still a reason not to be able to serve in the military, and there was an ongoing fear for anybody trying to conceal their sexual orientation. As the story in Boots kicks off, viewers are introduced to the main character, Cameron Cope.
Cameron is a closeted gay teenager who later meets a new bunkmate named Joshua Jones. As the story progresses, the drill instructor suspects Jones of being gay, and just like he wants to protect Cameron, the instructor also tries to learn more about the new recruit.
Find out how Jones' story unfolds in Boots below.
Who is Jones in the Netflix series Boots?
Jack Kay plays Joshua Jones in Boots. He is a recruit and stays with Cameron after his original bunkmate left. Jones' arrival adds another layer of conflict as Sergeant Sullivan, who is good at sensing other people's sexuality, instantly detects that, just like Cameron, Jones may also be gay.
Instead of being supportive, Sullivan uses this understanding to manipulate both of them. He deliberately encourages Joshua to pick fights with Cameron and create conflict between the two. The sergeant’s idea is that if they are busy clashing with each other, they won’t become close or draw attention to their sexuality.
In his view, keeping them at odds is a way to protect them from suspicion or harm in the harsh environment they’re in. As seen in the series, the instructor is carrying scars from the past. And since he sees parts of himself in Cameron, he wanted to protect the young man.

What happens with Jones in Boots?

As the story in Boots continues, the tension between Jones and Cameron also grows. Jones always wanted to leave the Marine life, and his sexual orientation is one of the reasons why he wasn't able to fit in.
Joshua Jones’s story builds up to its most intense and emotional moment during the Marines’ toughest training challenge, "The Crucible." This is a final test that pushes recruits to their limits both physically and mentally, and to see if they have the strength, endurance, and teamwork skills needed to become Marines.
During this exhausting test, Jones intentionally tries to get under Cameron’s skin. He provokes him on purpose, saying or doing things that make Cameron angry. The constant pressure, stress, and emotional burden become too much for Cameron to handle, and in a moment of rage, he loses control and attacks Jones physically.
After this outburst, Cameron faces the consequences. Instead of being punished immediately, he’s told to take responsibility for Jones’s well-being for the rest of the Crucible. This means he must look after the very person he just fought with, making sure Jones is safe and able to complete the trial.
One night, Joshua Jones sleepwalks into the nearby swamps in the Boots TV series and goes missing. Cameron and Sergeant Sullivan find him injured, and Sullivan surprisingly shows compassion by guiding Cameron on how to treat his wound.
Jones later fails to complete the Crucible and is discharged, something he had secretly wanted. Before he leaves, Sullivan quietly gives him his radio, a small but meaningful gesture of letting Jones go and find peace outside the harsh Marine world.
