Boston Blue: Will Tom Selleck have a Frank Reagan cameo in the Blue Bloods spin-off? Star opens up

CBS's latest procedural, Boston Blue, is continuing the Blue Bloods and Reagan family legacy on television but fans are longing to see Tom Selleck return as his iconic Frank Reagan character in the spin-off series. The newly released spin-off is a sequel to Blue Bloods, led by Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan in Boston.

Blue Bloods remains one of the most beloved and celebrated police procedural series on the small screen. The show started back in 2010 and was unceremoniously canceled after fourteen successful seasons in December 2024, when the show was still in its prime. The show continued to charm fans on its regular lineup on CBS, every Friday at 10 pm.

Even after numerous fan petitions, the network was firm in its decision and the show went off-air after fourteen seasons. However, in a little moment of victory, Wahlberg pitched Boston Blue, which made its debut on October 17. The spin-off follows Danny Reagan as he moves to Boston after getting involved in a case concerning his beat cop son, Sean. Danny eventually takes up a position with the Boston Police Department and is partnered up with Lena Silver.

For fans wondering if Selleck's Frank will have a cameo appearance in the spin-off series, the actor finally has an answer, which will likely break many hearts.

Tom Selleck is not keen on returning as Frank Reagan in Boston Blue

In a recent interview with Hour Detroit, the Friends alumni opened up on the matter:

“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue. That’s another show. I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”

Loyal Blue Bloods fans, who were waiting with bated breath to see Selleck return as Frank on their screens, will surely be disappointed, but the actor has spoken his mind.

So far, two Blue Bloods stars have appeared in Boston Blue, namely Marisa Ramirez's Maria Baez and Bridget Moynahan's Erin Reagan. The spin-off series even surprised seasoned fans by revealing that Danny and Maria are currently dating, following which the latter surprised her boyfriend with an impromptu visit to Boston.

While Tom Selleck doesn't seem eager to return as Frank in Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg wants his character to reunite with his on-screen father. In an interview with Parade, Wahlberg teased:

“New York and Boston are really close. I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes.”

This gave hope for Frank Reagan's return on the small screen but Selleck's recent comments suggest that it was a far-fetched dream.

Tom Selleck has expressed his disappointment with Blue Bloods' cancelation

In addition to fans, the Blue Bloods cast was also highly disappointed with CBS' decision to cancel the show at its peak. Selleck has especially expressed his frustration with this news, as he added:

“It [Blue Bloods] was actually No. 9, but if you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television. I’ve been on a lot of sets that were miserable where the cast didn’t like each other, but in Blue Bloods, everyone was professional and everyone liked each other. That is so rare.”

It was certainly frustrating for the cast and fans alike but Boston Blue is continuing the tradition alive, bringing the similar themes of family and faith (set by the Reagan family) in the spin-off. It remains to be seen if the series will feature more Blue Bloods characters in the future.
