Vince Gilligan won’t be stepping away from his creative partnership with Sony anytime soon, as the writer-director has extended his deal with the studio shortly before the premiere of their new show, Pluribus.

Sony Pictures Television has been behind Vince Gilligan’s memorable projects, including the Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul-starrer dark comedy crime thriller Breaking Bad. They also collaborated with Gilligan on the Breaking Bad spin-off, Better Call Saul, which followed the past and the future of Saul Goodman’s character, played by Bob Odenkirk.

According to the latest reports from Variety, Gilligan has renewed his overall deal with the studio due to their continued support of his creative pursuits over the years. In a statement shared with the outlet, Gilligan said,

“Every three or four years I figure it’s time to try someplace new…but then I remember I’ve got it pretty great at Sony Pictures Television."

He also added,

"I really like Katherine, Ravi, and all the folks there. They’re excellent partners who treat me well — and they do a fine job of looking out for ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Better Call Saul,’ and now ‘Pluribus. ‘Therefore, I’m proud (and a little sad) to be working for Hollywood’s last independent studio. I think our industry would benefit from more of them.”

Vince Gilligan has been one of the standout voices from American television

In 1999, HBO brought David Chase's The Sopranos to the screens, which offered a different take on mob crime dramas than before. The show doesn't rely on the usual flashiness of violence. Instead, it interrogates the root of their violent behavior and offers an introspective piece of television that holds up even years after its premiere.

Nearly a decade later, Vince Gilligan brought Breaking Bad, a neo-western drama series that followed a cancer-ridden science teacher who breaks bad and decides to sell dr*gs. The show tapped into the black comedic roots of Chase's show to critique its deeply flawed and insecure protagonist, while also turning his journey into irresistible television.

That's why Vince Gilligan may always be considered as one of the standout voices in American Television, whose work shines through his intricate writing and unhurried pace. Even years later, people keep revisiting these shows to realize details they might have missed earlier. The spin-off project, Better Call Saul, enjoyed a similarly dedicated fanbase.

Hence, it's no surprise that Sony Pictures Television Studios is just as interested in collaborating with Vince Gilligan as he is. The studio's president, Katherine Pope, shared a statement with Variety, in which she speaks highly of Gilligan's creative output and looks forward to their continued creative partnership. Here's what it says,

“Beyond being a legend and a true giant in our business, Vince Gilligan is an incredible human being who is always looking out for and shining the spotlight on others. He’s a humble genius, the rarest of the rare, and we couldn’t be prouder to continue our unprecedented partnership with him.”

Gilligan and Sony's new collaboration, Pluribus, will have its two-episode premiere on November 7, 2025, on Apple TV+.
