After months of teasing, Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has finally gone into development. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is reprising the titular role, has confirmed that work has begun on the pilot of the new show.

The reboot is being made over two decades after the original supernatural drama’s conclusion. The franchise revolves around Buffy Summers, who is chosen by fate to become a vampire slayer.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has taken to Instagram to post a behind-the-scenes image of the reboot, revealing that the table read of the pilot episode took place recently. With the script now ready, Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot might begin filming soon.

On July 22, 2025, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a couple of pictures from the table read of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot’s pilot episode. The first picture shows her name card with her character’s name, Buffy Summers.

The second picture shows the script’s front page, where the name of the show has been blacked out, hinting that the reboot might have a new title. The actress captioned the post, "Baby steps."

Gellar is currently the only cast member from the original series who is confirmed to return for the revival. She will be joined by Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who will play a young Vampire Slayer. The pilot has been written by Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman, who previously worked on Suits, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Poker Face.

Chloé Zhao, the director of films like Nomadland, Eternals, and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, has helmed the pilot. The project is in development at Hulu, though the streamer has not yet given a full-season order for the series.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on The WB and UPN from 1997 to 2003. The show was inspired by the 1992 film of the same name and followed Buffy Summers, a high school student who wanted to live a normal life, but was instead chosen to fight demons and vampires.

The original series also starred Alyson Hannigan, Anthony Stewart Head, Nicholas Brendon, Charisma Carpenter, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, James Marsters, and Marc Blucas. In an interview with Vanity Fair last month, Gellar revealed that she was not ready for the reboot until Chloé came on board:

“For so many years, I said no to a possible return of the series. I didn’t want to reintroduce something we had already seen. I waited for the right time to come. Then Chloé, a big Buffy fan, proposed the project to me, and I accepted. The gestation was long. It’s been three years, and we’re still working on it.”

Further talking about how the revival series will incorporate contemporary themes and ideas, Gellar said:

"We’re trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media. What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today.”
