Butterfly has been topping the viewership charts on Prime Video ever since its premiere. The spy thriller series is winning over fans with its twists and turns, and an action-packed narrative. However, the show features only six episodes, which has left the fans demanding a second season.

Daniel Dae Kim, who plays the lead role of David Jung and also serves as an executive producer on the project, has now talked about the future of the program. While Prime Video has not yet announced a Butterfly Season 2, the actor said the series will get renewed if the team is lucky.

In an interview with Deadline, Daniel stated that he is ready to make a second season if it gets greenlit by the streamer. However, he added that his production company is creating several projects, so the team will continue to work hard no matter what:

“If we’re lucky enough, we’ll be greenlit for a season two of Butterfly, and we’ll be prepping that. I look forward to it, but my company has multiple projects in active development right now, so we’re plugging away.”

Daniel Dae Kim opens up about Butterfly Season 2

Butterfly premiered on Prime Video on August 13, 2025, and earned rave reviews from the audience and critics for its familial theme, thrilling screenplay, and stellar performances.

Prime Video will likely take a few days to analyze the performance of the show and then make a decision about its renewal. However, the series is already ruling the top 10 charts on the platform, which is certainly a positive sign for its potential second season.

The show is based on Arash Amel’s graphic novel series of the same name, per Deadline. However, the series makers have incorporated several changes. During the interview, Daniel Dae Kim revealed that it was his idea to base the story in South Korea, contrary to the original setting of the US and Europe:

“It was a great father-daughter story. But in the original comic book, they’re played by characters who are white, and it takes place in the U.S. and Europe. I asked whether or not they would mind changing the characters to Asian-American and set it in Korea. Shooting something in Korea has always been a goal of mine, and they were open to the idea.”

Talking about the experience of filming Butterfly in South Korea, Daniel said he loved the process as he got to shoot in his birthplace, Busan:

“We shot in over 20 cities all throughout South Korea, and I loved showcasing the mountainside, countryside as well as the skyscrapers of Seoul. I love that we got to shoot in Busan too, which is where I was born.”

Created by Steph Cha and Ken Woodruff, the show also stars Reina Hardesty as Rebecca, Kim Tae-hee as Eunju Kim, Park Hae-soo as Yong Shik Choi, Piper Perabo as Juno, Louis Landau as Oliver Barnes, Kim Ji-hoon as Gun, Sean Dulake as Hollis, Charles Parnell as George Dawson, and Nayoon Kim as Minhee Jung.

All episodes of Butterfly Season 1 are streaming on Prime Video.
