After nearly two years, Platonic Season 2 premiered on August 6, 2025, on Apple TV+. The official synopsis of the show, as noted by Rotten Tomatoes, reads,
“Platonic former best friends approaching midlife reconnect after a long rift; the duo's friendship becomes more consuming and destabilizes their lives.”
Season 1 stayed true to the show's title, with protagonists Will and Sylvia maintaining a strictly platonic friendship. It ended with the news of Will’s engagement to his boss Jenna, and Season 2 picks up immediately after the events of the first season.
Talking about how the initial plan of ending Will and Sylvia’s story in Platonic Season 1 changed, Seth Rogen, who plays the character of Will, told Variety,
“We felt like the season did have an ending, but what if it kept going? If it kept going, it wouldn’t feel completely crazy. Then they came up with more ideas, and they thought of a whole second season.”
Now that season 2 is here, it would be interesting to see how the dynamic between Will and Sylvia is played around with as the show continues to maintain its will-they/ won’t-they theme.
Platonic Season 2 will delve deeper into Will and Sylvia’s friendship
Will went through a messy divorce in Platonic Season 1, and in Season 2, he is ready to get married again. Sylvia has been a constant presence in his life through these major events, so Jenna’s words to her in the bathroom were a shock. Regarding Jenna’s comment, Rose Byrne, who plays Sylvia, told Variety,
“It’s one of those comments that can be read in so many different ways. It’s sort of offhand, and it’s like being gaslit a little bit. You’re like ‘Wait, what? Did she say that?’ It’s a gaslighting comment that I’ve had said to me in the past. Of course, throughout your life, people throw things your way, and you’re like ‘What are you talking about?’”
She further added,
“In the moment, you’re asking yourself if they’re joking or if maybe you’re uptight. It’s more complex because Jenna is her best friend’s bride, and Sylvia is desperately trying to be supportive.”
The first two episodes also show how Sylvia influences Will’s perspective on his relationship with Jenna. However, given Will's character, he's likely to go through with the marriage even if it makes him unhappy.
On the other hand, if Will and Sylvia just talk about their feelings, they might have a chance at real happiness. It remains to be seen how they handle the new developments in their friendship in the upcoming episodes. Platonic can be streamed on Apple TV+.
