We already know that one of the movies included in the DCU is The Suicide Squad (2021). The James Gunn-directed movie was initially released in 2021 as a part of the now-defunct DCEU (DC Extended Universe). Then, Peacemaker Season 1 followed up on the events of the movie. However, when the DCEU was written out, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Blue Beetle were incorporated into the new DC Universe.

Now, one of the actors from The Suicide Squad, Jai Courtney, has expressed hope of reprising his role as Captain Boomerang/Digger Harkness in the DCU. He did so in a Screen Rant interview with Liam Crowley.

What did Jai Courtney say about a potential DCU return as Captain Boomerang?

As mentioned before, The Suicide Squad (2021) is a part of the DC Universe (DCU), therefore, Captain Boomerang's death in the opening minutes of The Suicide Squad is canon. But superhero stories regularly undo the deaths of both superheroes and supervillains. Now, Jai Courtney sat down for an interview with Screen Rant to talk about his movie, Dangerous Animals.

The conversation then shifted to the possibility of Courtney reprising his role of Captain Boomerang in Peter Safran and James Gunn's DCU. Screen Rant's Liam Crowley first said:

"I mentioned Boomerang. You were in the headlines recently where you said that James might've not closed the door completely."

To this, the actor responded:

"You can't say anything these days. I actually should have bit my tongue because, by the way, James hasn't said anything to me about anything, so that might've been a bit of clickbait. But, listen, all I've ever said is if someone called, I'll show up and do that role again."

Hearing this answer, Crowley asked Courtney if the latter was open to playing other roles in the DCU as well:

"Is it only for Boomerang though, or are you open to other roles in the DC world?"

Jai Courtney's answer was:

"I mean, sure, whatever. I'm open to anything. We can always have a conversation. But I think where that's coming from is, like, that's just a role that I loved playing, and it was sad to give him up. So if there's any more mileage to milk out of it, I'm your guy."

Given how well Jai Courtney was received as Captain Boomerang (even in the maligned 2016 Suicide Squad), it would not be surprising if both the actor's representatives and DC Studios' representatives found a way to incorporate him into the DCU.

Jai Courtney's previous comments also hinted at him wanting to return in the DCU

This is not the first time that Jai Courtney has addressed the possibility of returning to the DCU. In a Variety interview on May 17, 2025, Courtney spoke about his reaction to his character's death in the opening act of The Suicide Squad and what James Gunn told him to feel better:

"I was like, 'Come on, man. Boomerang is cool.' James is like, 'You know these rules don't really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?' And I was like, 'Hell yeah.'"

Thus, it is clear that his DC role is one of Courtney's favorites, and it is a role even fans love the actor in. Thus, it would make sense if Gunn were to rehire Courtney in the DC Universe.
