Can Wendy's weird new Xenomorph story in Alien: Earth Episode 4 be a turning point in the sci-fi franchise? Here's what we think

In Alien: Earth Episode 3, Wendy collapsed in the Prodigy lab after she could hear the screeching sound of the Xenomorph in pain. Turns out as a hybrid, she bears the ability to hear the Xenomorph sounds, which nobody else can. Wendy's new capabilities could be a turning point in the series' plotline.

Creator Noah Hawley seems ready to take the franchise to another level with Wendy and the baby Xenomorphs' interaction in Episode 4. Speaking to Decider, he pointed out it was childlike innocence and empathy that helped them bond:

"The other thing with children is they don’t really assign… I mean, these are just animals to them, you know? So she’s looking at these creatures, and she has empathy the same way that my daughter became a vegetarian when she was nine. Well, these creatures didn’t ask to come here, and maybe they’re frightened.”

Alien: Earth episode 4 opens with the researchers disabling Wendy's hearing functions to ease her pain. But Boy Kavalier, the trillionaire running Prodigy's lab, sees this gift as an opportunity to weaponize the strange communication with the creatures.

Even though Arthur and Dame Silvia worry about the risks, Wendy insists on keeping her hearing activated, believing the aliens are truly speaking to her. In a chilling lab scene, she mimics the sound of the Xenomorphs. And for Wendy, this becomes a pivotal key to unlock a new way to manipulate and dominate the creatures.

Alien: Earth Episode 4 recap: Wendy communicates with a baby Xenomorph

Apart from Wendy's Xenomorph narrative, a lot happens in Episode 4. Firstly, Nibs suffers a mental break, convinced she is pregnant. Dame attempts to calm her, but the incident escalates into a Level 3 security alert, hinting that the hybrid program may be more unstable than they thought.

Meanwhile, Slightly remains under Morrow's manipulation. On the other hand, Boy Kavalier emotionally manipulates Wendy, telling her to communicate with the aliens if she wants her brother Joe to stay with her.

The climax delivers the most striking scene of the episode: A xenomorph bursts from Joe's transplanted lungs, only to respond to Wendy's mimicking sounds. Instead of attacking, the creature recognizes her presence, even allowing her to touch it. And what happens next is a rare moment: A xenomorph appears to bond with a hybrid.

What does Wendy's Xenomorph twist mean for the franchise?

The ending of Episode 4 marks a sharp departure from Alien's traditional dynamic of predator and prey. If Wendy can communicate with Xenomorph, the franchise shifts from sheer survival horror to a story of possible co-existence or worse: A dangerous manipulation. With Boy Kavalier instructing Wendy, it looks like the latter situation is likely to happen.

However, it also opens up several possibilities. Wendy's interaction with the newborn alien is quite tender, raising doubts about Wendy's loyalties. It also questions who controls whom. Is she pacifying the Xenomorph, or is it imprinting on her for its own survival? The confusion leaves room for darker turns, especially under Kavalier's watch. His willingness to exploit Wendy at the cost of her well-being ensures that he is ready to go to extremes to fulfill his goals.

With Episode 4, Alien: Earth doesn't just raise the stakes-it redefines them. Wendy's strange connection to the xenomorphs could be the pivot that takes the franchise into uncharted territory.
