Written by Matt Charman, Hostage, a British political thriller, premiered on Netflix on August 21, 2025. Consisting of 5 episodes, the official synopsis of the show, as mentioned by Rotten Tomatoes, reads,
“When the British prime minister's husband is kidnapped and the French president starts receiving threats, both leaders must face an impossible choice.”
While Hostage has received positive feedback from both viewers and critics alike, Hostage Season 2 has not been confirmed. The finale of the first season wrapped up the key plot point of the series, but there are multiple avenues where the story can go if it is renewed.
Hostage Season 2 has not yet been officially confirmed
As mentioned previously, there is no official update regarding Hostage Season 2 happening. While some shows get renewed days after they are aired or even before the premiere of one season, some shows take their own time when it comes to renewal.
Netflix, like any other streamer, considers a number of factors like viewership numbers, ratings, critics’ response, etc, before renewing a series. The same logic might be applied to Hostage, though it should be kept in mind that the show was promoted as a limited series, which means renewal chances of Hostage Season 2 happening might be thinner than regular shows.
However, show creator Matt Charman does have hopes for another season as he has more stories to tell. Talking to Radio Times about the same, Matt said,
“Yeah, if we were lucky enough, I’d love to take this story on.”
When asked what his vision would be for another season, in case it happens, and if that would also focus on a different hostage situation, Matt said in the same interview,
“Well, 'hostage' means different things. When I think about the show, I don’t really think about Alex, I think more about the two leaders, I think of Suranne and Julie’s characters.”
He further added,
“They’re the hostages, they’re the ones being held and they’re the ones that are being blackmailed. So, it’s really about riffing on that word ‘hostage’, what does it mean to be under someone else’s control? So I think that’s where I would kind of explore further.”
He also mentioned that since he loves working with Suranne Jones, in case another season comes into being, he would like her on board. With the creator quite enthusiastic about Hostage Season 2, it now remains to be seen if Netflix renews it or chooses to keep it as a limited series only.
Hostage can be streamed on Netflix.
