Derek Haas' latest crime thriller, Countdown, has been the talk of the town for a while now, amidst an overall dismal reception. The Prime Video show is set in Los Angeles, California, where a federal task force, led by FBI Special Agent Nathan Blythe (Eric Dane), is set up to neutralize a dangerous national threat that eventually turns out to be a Belarusian terrorist.
The Jensen Ackles thriller, despite a promising plot and a star-studded cast, failed to reach the heights of success, not to mention how the showrunners decided to introduce a new story mid-season. That is where a new face, Secret Service Agent Ryan Fitzgerald, aka Fitz, came into the picture.
He is portrayed as a young and enthusiastic officer whose dedication to work landed him one of the most important cases of his career, a threat to the Governor of California and the POTUS. However, Countdown Season 1 failed to justify his promising arc despite being pivotal to the new plot.

Agent Fitzgerald definitely deserved the spotlight in Countdown Season 1, but mainly remained on the sidelines
Agent Fitzgerald (played by Joe Dinicol) makes his first appearance in Countdown Season 1 Episode 10, where he is seen struggling with the "bottom of the barrel" cases, or rather, the least prioritized ones, the Muzzle Pile.
As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Fitz is a hardworking young agent who has not received the promotion he deserved so far and is seeking the opportunity for a breakthrough in his career, like searching for a needle in a haystack. It is at this point that Fitz stumbles upon a mysterious voice note from the pile of random threat reports.
As seen in Countdown Episode 10, it was the voice of a woman named Patricia Perez who reported about a man possessing firearms in a Hammerhead Cabin in Sugarloaf, where she was working at the moment. Though initially unsure whether it is concerning, Fitz is struck by something, and a hunch drives him to pursue the case. Hethus takes his seniors' permission to check the location, and when Fitz arrives, he discovers a woman lying dead inside the above-mentioned cabin.
As it appears, it was Patricia Perez and Fitz's instinct that made him do the right thing. The initial investigation leads to something much bigger, and the Feds are also involved, as expected. Nathan Blythe takes the lead and assembles a new team (with all his old members): Task Force Armor.
The only new member to join the team is Agent Fitz. But despite being the one who initiated the investigation on a case that appears to be a direct threat to the government, his input remains limited.
It is true that Agent Fitz, till the Countdown Season 1 finale, remains by Natha Blythe's side and leads all the briefings. But his role could have had a lot more impact, especially because he was from the Secret Service.
Fitz's character does not get much time to develop, and the arc feels a bit rushed. Fitz has a sparkly presence with an outer weird aura but a sharp mind. However, he does not get his deserved creative treatment, and the focus mainly remains on other characters like Mark, Oliveras, and Shepherd. Agent Fitz also contributes a lot to the investigation using his ties with the Secret Service, but is never appreciated as a hardworking team member. He is rather seen by his team members as someone who talks more and doesn't fit in.
Fitz is a part of the team but fails to reach the core of it. But after the cliffhanger Season 1 finale, Countdown has set the bar high for itself.
Moreover, if Countdown Season 2 happens, it has the best chance to give more screen time to young officer Fitz, who is definitely a promising character but seems to have been overshadowed by the others.
