Dateline: The Window featured the tragic case of Hannah Hove Becker, a 32-year-old military wife and mother, who plunged to her death in 2015 from her Belgium Penthouse apartment's window.
Hannah's husband, Craig Becker (who was amid a divorce from his wife), claimed that his wife was struggling with their failing marriage and her mental health, which led her to commit su*c*de.
According to Craig, Hannah was drinking heavily on the night of Oct. 8, 2015, which led her to commit the act. She threw herself out of the window and died shortly after reaching the hospital, due to internal bleeding.
Since Dateline victim Hannah's father believed that Craig murdered his daughter, her case was treated as a homicide.
Here is a complete timeline of Dateline victim Hannah and Craig Becker’s relationship, which ultimately became the reason for her tragic death.
Dateline: Exploring victim Hannah's troublesome relationship with Craig Becker
Hannah Hove was just six years old when she moved to the US with her parents from Sweden.
In 2005, Dateline victim Hannah Hove was a graduate student pursuing psychology at a University. This is when she met Craig Becker, a Navy soldier, at the University swimming pool for the first time. Hannah instantly took a liking to Craig, as her college roommate Elizabeth Aciego remembered:
“She definitely told me she was like, ‘I think this guy is the one. And I was, like, super excited about that because she had never really mentioned anybody that was going to be special to her.”
The couple hastily got married when Craig proposed an impromptu wedding on the beach with just Aciego to take their wedding photos.
However, trouble soon found its way into the couple's married life because of Craig's high-pressure job. As Aciego revealed on Dateline, Craig was assigned to a 19-man bomb disposal unit and was deployed on long overseas missions, which isolated Hannah from him. In addition, Craig was controlling of his wife and would not allow her to meet with her friends.
When Dateline victim Hannah Hove turned to one of Craig's friends for support, the two eventually started an affair. However, Hannah regretted her actions and wanted to make her marriage work when Craig was assigned to a post at a NATO facility in Mons, Belgium, in 2012. The couple also welcomed their first daughter, but Craig eventually got a whiff of his wife's affair.
In the winter of 2014, the couple returned to Hannah's parents' home in Florida to spend their holidays, but Craig stayed separately in a hotel. While her friends and family advised Hannah to stay in Florida and leave Craig, she returned to Belgium to be with Craig and their daughter.
In 2015, the couple was trying to make their marriage work, but nothing seemed to work. Eight months after their return from Florida, the couple was sleeping in different beds and had filed for divorce. Hannah had also started another relationship with a maintenance man named Chris.
While Craig Becker maintained that his wife was drinking heavily on the night of October 8, 2015, her blood alcohol content showed just traces of alcohol. In 2022, when Dateline victim Hannah's case went to trial, Military prosecutors argued that Craig slipped sleeping pills in Hannah's lasagna and shoved her from their penthouse's window, making it look like a su*c*de.
While the defense maintained that Hannah threw herself out of the window, her husband was found guilty of murder on April 30, 2022, and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
