The Hunting Wives has become one of the most talked-about shows of the year, thanks to its thrilling narrative and raunchy scenes. The show follows Sophie O'Neil, a woman who moves to a fictional East Texas town and gets involved with a group of elite women, which turns her life upside down.

The mystery drama has become a certified hit on Netflix as it continues to be in the top 10 charts in the US. However, despite its success, it is still not available to stream in multiple countries and territories.

To add to the audience's worries, The Hunting Wives could also be removed from Netflix a year after its release. This is because the show is not a Netflix original, and the streamer acquired it from Lionsgate Television on a one-year license deal.

Netflix has a one-year license to stream The Hunting Wives

Though The Hunting Wives landed straight on Netflix, the show is not a part of the streaming platform’s original content. Instead, it has licensed the show from the production company Lionsgate Television for one year, and that too only in the US. That is why the show is not available on Netflix in international territories.

If Netflix and Lionsgate choose not to renew the license after one year, the show would stop being a part of the streaming giant’s catalog in the US as well. However, considering the massive viewership, the deal has certainly turned out to be a profit for Netflix, so it is unlikely that the streamer will not renew the license after a year.

The Hunting Wives was supposed to be a Starz series

Lionsgate originally produced The Hunting Wives for Starz. However, with the split between the two companies, Starz did not intend to pick up the series, and Lionsgate shopped it to other platforms. Netflix then secured the US streaming rights of the show, just over a month before its premiere.

Meanwhile, Lionsgate sold the international distribution rights of the series to different platforms. The show is already available on Crave in Canada and Stan in Australia. However, audiences in major markets like the UK, India, and France are still awaiting the show's release. As per a report by Deadline, none of these countries will get the series on Netflix as the rights have been sold to other buyers.

That being said, the different licensing deals do not mean that the show will last for only one season. Considering its ratings and popularity, Lionsgate and Netflix could come up with an agreement to renew the show in the future. Meanwhile, the cast already has options to return for more episodes, and the series creator, Rebecca Cutter, has also expressed her interest in continuing the series.

Based on May Cobb’s novel of the same name, The Huting Wives stars Brittany Snow as Sophie O'Neil, Malin Akerman as Margo Banks, Evan Jonigkeit as Graham O'Neil, George Ferrier as Brad, Katie Lowes as Jill, Jaime Ray Newman as Callie, Dermot Mulroney as Jed Banks, Chrissy Metz as Starr, Michael Aaron Milligan as Kyle, and Madison Wolfe as Abby.

All episodes of The Hunting Wives Season 1 are currently streaming on Netflix.
