Eric Stonestreet has been known for making people laugh with his funnyman antics, but in Dexter: Resurrection he found himself in a new world of blood, secrets, and one very sharp table. This time, he wasn't goofing around as Cameron Tucker but here he was playing the chilling "Rapunzel Killer."

And when asked about his character Al, or Rapunzel, surviving the infamous ritual of Dexter Morgan, Stonestreet admitted with a mix of awe and disbelief. He says in Dexter: Final Cut:

"I was honored that I got away."

Mind you, few villains can ever say the same.

Eric Stonestreet’s chilling turn as Al Jolly in Dexter: Resurrection

For years, Eric Stonestreet has been recognized as the lovable Cam from Modern Family, but walking into the shoes of Al Jolly, also known as the Rapunzel Killer, was a major shift for the actor. Joining the Dexter universe wasn't something that came lightly and he confessed this during the Dexter: Final Cut. He mentioned how even auditioning was a dream. He said:

"Everyone wanted to get an audition for Dexter. I was just like everyone else, an actor trying to get a part. And then when Clyde and Scott Zoomed me to ask if I wanted to play the Rapunzel Killer, I was honored. I thought, well, you guys have good taste."

What followed was a character that instantly made the fans feel sick and ill. Al Jolly, with his bizarre obsession for ponytails, soon turned out to be one of the creepiest rivals in Dexter: Resurrection.

What really shook fans was not his crimes, but a turn of events in which he was able to survive Dexter. In Episode 8, Dexter set up one of the most unsettling kill rooms ever, filled with wigs and faceless mannequins, but Al slipped through his clutches and fans were stunned.

Stonestreet laughed about how rare it was, telling the showrunners;

"I was honored that I got away. I asked [executive producers] Scott [Reynolds] and Clyde [Phillips], what kind of rare air am I in? Has any serial killer ever escaped Dexter's table? [Dexter actor] Michael [C. Hall] was like, I don't think so."

This alone has made Eric Stonestreet's arc one of the most talked about of the season. His escape leaves Dexter feeling confused and the door wide open for what might come next.

Behind-the-scenes moments: Eric Stonestreet’s first day and star-studded scenes

Beyond his survival, Eric Stonestreet also had plenty of behind-the-scenes stories to share.

On his first day on set, he had the nervouse jitters. Filming an elevator scene with Michael C. Hall, he admitted he didn't know how much personal space to keep. Instead of simply holding back, he took the jump.

"That first scene of mine was literally when I get off the elevator. I didn't know Michael's personal boundaries, or Dexter's boundaries for that matter. But I just went for it - l grabbed him and hugged him. Afterward, they all told me to keep doing it. Michael was awesome he just rolled with it."

The nerves and boldness was seen through to one of the most unforgettable scenes of the season: a grand dinner party. Sitting next to Uma Thurman, Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, David Dastmalchian, Peter Dinklage, and Michael C. Hall, Eric Stonestreet could hardly believe all that was happening.

"Being there, I think I've heard Clyde say it - it's like a frameable call sheet. An eclectic group of legends and talented people all in one room. As an actor, you remind yourself, you're here for a reason. Something got you into this room. So own it."

His admiration for the show, the humility, and the mischief make his Dexter: Resurrection journey more than just another role, and it feels like a career highlight that he himself can't stop cherishing.

Eric Stonestreet didn't just play another killer in Dexter: Resurrection. He became part of the show's rarest club: a villain who escaped Dexter's table. With his candid reflections, touching moments with co-stars, and even that nervous first hug with Michael C. Hall, Eric Stonestreet proved he is more than just a guest star.

His journey has left fans waiting eagerly for what comes next, because in the world of Dexter, unfinished business never stays buried for long.
