Dexter: Resurrection is not only about serial killers and their thrill of committing crimes without getting caught - it is about something deeper and scarier. It is about identity, which doesn't "sound" scary, but when we discuss it in the context of the show, it is.
Everyone in this story is wearing a mask, pretending to be someone they are not. It is essential for them to hide their darkness to be able to be a part of society, and their game of hiding and lying is more dangerous than any weapon.
Dexter has always been living in disguise. That's not new. Back in the day, he was hiding his Dark Passenger. Now in Dexter: Resurrection, he is doing the same thing all over again but with a new name and a new life. This time, he is wearing a new mask as well, called “Red.” The problem is that masks always slip. And when they do, the truth comes crawling out. That is scarier than anything else because once people see him for who he really is, there is no going back.
The thing to remember is that this show is not just about killing. It is about the danger of lies. When people keep secrets and play roles for too long, it eats them up from the inside. That is why identity is the true killer here.
Dexter: Resurrection - The danger of pretending
Dexter is now living as Red, and trying to blend in with the serial killer club in Dexter: Resurrection. When you simply look at it, he seems to be playing the role well enough. However, the harder he tries to act like one of them, the easier it gets for them to sense that something is not right. Pretending can work but not forever. Truth always comes out one way or the other. It's only a matter of time. In Dexter: Resurrection, the tension comes from this. How long can he keep the mask on before it slips?
Mia, also known as Lady Vengeance, recently died in Dexter: Resurrection. Or so they showed in an epsiode. Is she really dead, or is this just another trick? If she is alive, then she is hiding behind another mask. She is playing dead so she can take down Dexter. What if Dexter, who is already suspicious about her suicide, gets to her first? This could also reveal Charley's true face. Mia's role is bigger than anyone guessed.
Leon Prater is another one to wear a mask in Dexter: Resurrection. His serial killer club is like a stage where everyone plays a part. They pretend to be loyal and united. Deep down, however, each one of them is watching their own back. That is how cult-like groups often work. People wear masks to survive, but sooner or later one person breaks and the truth spills out. When it does, betrayal follows. Like Dexter said in the latest episode:
"You all know me as the Dark Passenger. Well... I'm gonna level with you. What you're seeing here is not the Dark Passenger. Not now. This "Red Schimdt" you're looking at is the mask I put on. Only a select group of people get to see the Dark Passenger. And once they see him, they... die."
He continued:
"I haven't known you all very long, but I know the burden you carry, the mask you wear, how heavy it is, how lonely you are because... no one knows you. No one sees you. Al has the biggest smile I've ever seen. You'd think he has it all. A perfect family, house in the suburbs, his kills. But your family will never know the whole you. If you ever let your mask slip, the good husband and perfect father would, poof, disappear. All they'd see is darkness. They'd fear you. Maybe even turn you in."
He wrapped up by saying:
"Feeding my Dark Passenger gives me pleasure. But after my victims take their last breath, I feel... unbearable sadness. Because that brief moment when I'm completely myself is over. And then it's time to put the mask back on."
So, the real danger is in the lies people tell and the masks they wear. When the truth comes out, it is like a flood breaking loose, destroying everything in its path. In Dexter: Resurrection, the biggest bloodbath could potentially start from the moment identities get revealed. When that happens, no one will be safe.
