With each passing day, the release date of Dexter: Resurrection, the latest entry in Showtime's Dexter franchise, comes closer. The series, which is set right after the events of Dexter: New Blood, will follow a fully recovered Dexter in New York City, where he will be meeting Peter Dinklage's billionaire character Leon Prater, who has invited other serial killers too.

However, the Dexter: Resurrection trailer also shows the titular character escaping the hospital because he is under investigation that he is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter is outed as the Bay Harbor Butcher in The New Blood finale. Therefore, it looks like Resurrection will follow Dexter trying to satisfy his urges as he tries to find a new way to blend in and avoid authorities tailing him.

The Dexter: Resurrection trailer hints at a more unhinged Dexter:

In the first half of the Dexter: Resurrection trailer, David Zayas' Angel Batista tells Dexter that Police Chief Angela Bishop informed him that the Bay Harbor Butcher is the former blood splatter analyst. Thus, Resurrection seems to take the character to a new place where the previous entries of the show never went before, Dexter, who has been outed, or is on the verge of being outed.

In the trailer, Harry Morgan, in his hallucinatory form, tells Dexter to be cautious, but the Bay Harbor Butcher rebuffs this, hinting at a more unbalanced titular character. It is understandable, considering Dexter is trying his best to reunite with his son in New York while trying to avoid authorities on his tail. Thus, we may also get something new through Dexter: Resurrection.

What is Dexter: Resurrection about?

As mentioned before, Resurrection will be picking up right where Dexter: New Blood left off. Dexter was shot by Harrison in the finale of New Blood under the former's instruction. However, the opening scenes of Dexter: Original Sin's first episode do set the stage for Dexter: Resurrection. An ambulance takes unconscious Dexter to the hospital, where he is revived.

Other than this five-minute sequence, Original Sin, which is a prequel series, the show doesn't connect to Resurrection. All that we can ascertain from the trailer is that Dexter is greeted by the mysterious Leon Prater, who is a fan of serial killers.

Who stars in Resurrection?

Resurrection is stacked with an impressive cast consisting of:

  1. Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan
  2. Jack Alcott as Harrison Morgan
  3. James Remar as Harry Morgan
  4. David Zayas as Angel Batista
  5. Uma Thurman as Charley
  6. Peter Dinklage as Leon Prater
  7. Krysten Ritter as Mia Lapierre/Lady Vengeance
  8. Neil Patrick Harris as Lowell/The Tattoo Collector
“Dexter: Resurrection, a continuation of Dexter: New Blood, takes place weeks after Dexter Morgan takes a bullet to the chest from his own son, as he awakens from a coma to find Harrison gone without a trace. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But closure won’t come easy. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined – and that the only way out is together.”

The latest entry in the Dexter franchise will release on July 11, 2025.
