Dexter: Resurrection has been giving us one surprise after another. One of the biggest came when Dexter stepped into the world of Leon Prater. We met Prater in Episode 4, Call Me Red, during that dinner party filled with killers and eerie memorabilia. It was also the first time Dexter faced the so-called serial killer club, hosted by none other than Peter Dinklage’s mysterious Leon Prater.
Prater stands out from the rest of the group. He isn't a serial killer or even just some random collector. He is an admirer of serial killers. He carries himself with a strange kind of authority. There is something that tells us there is more to the character in Dexter: Resurrection. Dexter walked into the mansion as Red, and since then, Prater’s eyes have been locked on him.
And now it looks like we are finally getting answers. Peter Dinklage has spoken about Leon Prater’s actual feelings towards the man he believes to be Red. What does he really think about Dexter? Let’s get into what the actor has revealed.
Dexter: Resurrection - Peter Dinklage breaks down Leon Prater’s feelings for Dexter
Peter Dinklage is an award-winning actor who's best known for playing Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. The role also made him a global star and earned him Primetime Emmy Awards. He got his big break with The Station Agent (2003). Since then, he has only risen.
In Dexter: Resurrection, he plays Leon Prater, a rich collector with a taste for rare objects. But underneath that cool exterior is a man with a very dark fascination. Leon is obsessed with serial killers. He studies their methods, their thinking, and the way they carry out their crimes. This obsession did not come out of nowhere.
When his parents died in a car accident, Leon came face-to-face with the man responsible. Instead of anger or fear, he asked him what he was thinking in that exact moment. The details of that conversation unlocked something inside Leon that never went away. From then on, he found power in understanding darkness, and that shaped the man he would become.
Peter Dinklage has finally opened up about what the character really feels for Red, who is of course Dexter in disguise in Dexter: Resurrection. According to Dexter Daily, Dinklage said:
“He respects some of the others, but I don’t think he really likes them. He likes Red. He can see himself being almost friends with Red. The other ones—it’s a business transaction. He’s never told his backstory to any of them, nor has he wanted to. Maybe he doesn’t trust them with that information.
He also explained:
“He’s actually feeling friendship, or love, or whatever you want to call it, for the first time with Red. There’s a kindness he sees in him—even though it’s crazy, considering the violence happening around them. And when we shot that scene, it clicked: I don’t want to play a villain the audience can’t wait to see die. The best villains, you empathize with a bit. His parents were killed in front of him—how can you not feel something?”
He pointed to Leon’s trauma, having watched his parents die, as a reason the audience might understand him better. The actor believes it adds depth. It shows that even a man with such a dark obsession can still long for connection.
In Dexter: Resurrection Episode 7, this bond came to the surface when Gareth died. Dinklage admitted:
“For one, I don’t think Prater really liked Gareth. He was arrogant, he set himself apart from the pack. Red did such a convincing job in the chaos of that moment, of course Prater would believe him.”
For the first time, Leon Prater in Dexter: Resurrection was not following darkness. He was following someone he could almost call a friend.
