Dexter: Resurrection brought season one to an end with a cliffhanger on the series finale that left viewers agog! From Dexter's last-minute escape from Prater's vault to Harrison saving the day at the eleventh hour, the series finale shook everyone.
Angel Batista's shocking death, Prater's documents stolen by Dexter, and the foreboding introduction of Don Framt as the New York Ripper made sure Season 1 didn't conclude on a note but on a cliffhanger. What contributed to the legend of the series finale was that it concluded with strings left loose.
Dexter: Resurrection did not wrap up Dexter's internal conflict or the external danger hanging over his head. Instead, it strung together a series of loose ends and left one guessing what a second season might look like.
Presented below are five of the biggest loose ends left by Season 1 and Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 needs to happen to address these 5 burning questions
1. What does Prater have in his files, anyway, and how is Dexter ever going to profit from them in Dexter: Resurrection?
We'd gotten a glimpse of Dexter pilfering Prater's private files, including dossiers on a pair of killers, at the finale's conclusion. There was even a whole file on Charley. This was now reality, sure as shooting if Dexter's got something incriminating now.
What's left to see is whether Dexter will utilize these files only to hunt down new murderers, or may the files somehow draw him further into Prater's existence? The episode left the question open, but Season 2 will determine whether or not Dexter considers the files tools of his code and something else, something akin to leverage, or even recruitment material.
2. In what ways will hallucinations influence Dexter's thoughts in the future in Dexter: Resurrection?
Ghosts of deceased Brother Brian were glimpsed in Season 1. Season finale also revealed that Batista, who was murdered by Prater, could be an akin character in the form of a mental construct within the mind of Dexter.
How will plopping Batista into Dexter's internal monologue inform his moral compass? Batista served as a moral compass in real life, for crying out loud; Brian did not. Season 2 can employ hallucinations to show us a battle of voices in Dexter's head, guilt, temptation, and restraint.
3. Is Harrison totally dedicated to Dexter, or will he turn out to be his biggest threat in Dexter: Resurrection?
Harrison rescued Dexter in the season finale by fatally stabbing Prater with a syringe. This is just one instance of his devotion to rescuing his father when he needs him.
What's on the table is whether Harrison's allegiance is true or situational. An unresolved father-son conflict was established in Season 1. Season 2 can capitalize on Harrison questioning the code or betraying Dexter. The finale seeded enough doubt that this relationship is one of the strongest continuing threads to pursue.
4. What is the true motivation for the Serial Killers Club in Dexter: Resurrection?
Season 1 also imparted knowledge about the hidden club known as the Serial Killers Club, of which Prater was a member. Its existence was quite startling.
The series didn't explain what is typical for this group. Is this just a murder club, or is there another story here where some sort of rule or structure is involved? If Dexter does end up utilizing the files or the network whatsoever during Season 2, this group could be an even larger component of what he is doing.
5. Who is Don Framt, and is he in fact the New York Ripper in Dexter: Resurrection?
The finale named Don Framt as the New York Ripper, introducing him as a new villain and leaving the mystery wide open. His identity is a confirmed part of the ending.
Other than the name, nothing else was disclosed. Is Framt indeed the villain he's made out to be, or does he have a hidden agenda? Given the previous history of the show of flipping everything around, Season 2 may conceal this introduction by presenting Framt as a larger-than-life character or somebody up to something greater.
The cliffhanger at the end of Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 raised more questions than answers for the audience. Some of the most important plot turns, like Dexter surviving, Batista's demise, breaking into Prater's records, and the surprise twist about Don Framt, remain totally in the air.
Together with one another, open-ended problems, Harrison's allegiance, the continuous hallucinations of Dexter, the extent of the Serial Killers Club, and the mystery of the New York Ripper leave the narrative far from concluded.
Season 2, if there is one, will not only pick up from where Dexter's left off but will also provide some of the answers Season 1 was leaving so beautifully behind. And for the fans in the meantime, it is all speculation as to how much bigger Dexter's world is going to get.
