Prime Video's crime drama thriller by Derek Haas, Countdown, recently aired its first three episodes, and the Jensen Ackles show is already turning quite a few heads. With intense action, drama, and humor, the series kicks off at the heart of Los Angeles. The main plot revolves around the murder of a US customs officer, which prompts the FBI to set up a special task force to investigate the case.
Jensen Ackles' character, Detective Mark Meachum, who is recruited at the LAPD Robbery Division, is also called to be a part of the team alongside a number of other skilled officers from various fields. While the unit gears up for a quick launch, things start off rough as they try to catch the killer and find out potential moles inside Homeland Security.
With matters getting intense in Countdown Episode 1, Mark is seen visiting the doctor (because of his frequent headaches), where it is revealed that he has a brain tumor, and it doesn't look good. So the very first episode brings a sad layer to an already fan-favorite character, and it's yet to be seen what lies ahead for him.
Countdown already might have foreshadowed a sad ending for Jensen Ackles' character (even though it's just the start)
Supernatural star (and a recognized face from Prime Video's The Boys) Jensen Ackles is once again gracing the small screen with his sharp presence. This time, Ackles has taken up the role of a detective (Mark Meachum) who works for the LAPD's Robbery Homicide unit. Mark also has experience in working undercover and is a skilled agent who is known for his unconventional ways of tackling field assignments.
After getting recruited to a task force (designated for an undercover mission) by FBI Special Agent as well as senior officer Nathan Blythe (portrayed by Eric Dane), Mark helps his able team to track down the killer of late US Customs officer Robert Darden (Milo Ventimiglia). The unit interviews Darden's co-workers, all while tracking his financial records to find potential involvement with a dangerous cartel named Los Reyes Nuevos.
And as expected, they learn that Darden was clean. Moreover, one of his colleagues at Homeland Security, Maurice Spellman, was receiving bribes from the bad men and was trying to pin it on Darden after the latter figured it out - that's when he was killed at the very start of Countdown.
Following a series of intense clashes, car chases, fights, and interviews, Mark is seen visiting the clinic. Though from the beginning of Countdown Episode 1, viewers see him rubbing his head (what looked like a sign of discomfort), it is not until the end of the pilot that his medical condition is revealed.
It is learned that Mark has started getting more frequent headaches, which sometimes catch him off guard while he is chasing bad men. And the root cause of it is, as the doctor reveals, an 'aggressive form of glioblastoma multiforme,' or what we commonly know as a brain tumor.
Mark's tumor has reached a stage where either surgery or radiation can cause even more damage than curing things. So, the doctor advises him to take some time off work and increase his dosage of medication, and also asks him to go on a vacation so that he can 'live out the time' he has left.
The doctor's words at the end of Countdown Episode 1 might have just foreshadowed a sad ending for Jensen Ackles' character. Though we are still only three episodes in (and a lot is yet to come), we need to wait to see whether the already fan-favorite character survives the brain tumor. It comes as an early revelation in Countdown Episode 1, leaving the viewers in shock, who are now speculating on a tragic conclusion to Mark's character arc.
