Netflix's latest mystery thriller series, Wayward, premiered on September 25, 2025. The show quickly gained everyone's attention with its twisted and mysterious plot that revolved around the cultish community living in the town of Tall Pines.

Some of the mysteries were solved at the end of the show, while some remain. For instance, we never get a clear answer about whether Laura killed her parents, as Evelyn claimed, or not. Since Lara had leaped as a teenager, she does not remember what happened to her parents. But Evelyn revealed that Laura had killed both of her parents when they came to the town to take her back with them.

However, since Evelyn herself is not the most trustworthy source, the truth about Laura's parents' killer remains ambiguous.

More on this in our story.

Did Laura kill her parents in Wayward? Details revealed

In Netflix's Wayward, the new couple, Alex and Laura, arrive in Tall Pines at the beginning of the series and get entangled in the mysteries of the town. While Alex was new to the town, Laura grew up in the town and followed the strange system that is led by Evelyn (Toni Collette), the head of Tall Pines Academy, a place for troubled teenagers.

Laura and Alex are both revealed to have troubled childhoods that affect many of the decisions that they make in the town, such as Alex killing his own partner. However, it's not just Alex, as in Episode 6 of Wayward, we learn that Laura was also like Alex. Up until that time, she thought that her parents might have forgotten about her. However, she is later informed by Alex that they had come to Tall Pines to take her back.

Coincidentally, she also finds their car drowned at the bottom of the pond where she goes swimming. The shocking twist comes when Evelyn reveals to Alex that Laura had killed both of her parents by smashing their heads with a rock. Evelyn only helped her cover up the horrific incident. She helped her in leaping, due to which she forgot about the traumatic and painful event altogether.

While Wayward doesn't explicitly reveal whether Laura killed her parents or not, since Evelyn is not the most reliable source, Laura's sometimes apathetic behaviour suggests that perhaps it was the truth.

Since Evelyn is not the most reliable source in Tall Pines, her revelation of Laura killing her parents might not be the whole truth or even close to the truth.

Wayward: Is Evelyn telling the truth about Laura? Speculations explored

In an episode of Wayward, Laura is seen brutally killing a toad with no remorse at all on her face. The incident does support Evelyn's words. Furthermore, it was Laura who knew where her parents were buried.

These facts do suggest that Laura might have killed her parents. However, as per the series, Evelyn also has a clear upper hand on the memories of the teenagers who are sent to the Tall Pines Academy. As seen with Leila, Evelyn's therapy sessions are dangerous. She made Leila think that she killed her sister with her suggestive questions.

Therefore, since both Leila and Laura have gone through the leap, a clear answer to whether they killed their family was not provided in the series. Further, in both cases, Evelyn's intervention in their memories has created an ambiguous turn of events, making it difficult to determine if Evelyn was telling the truth.
