Netflix's new thriller series, Wayward, premiered on September 25, 2025. The eight-part series follows the story of Laura and Alex, a couple who arrive in the mysterious town of Tall Pines, where Laura had spent her early years. The show's central theme is the depiction of generational abuse and how people growing up in those abusive households confront these deep-rooted issues.

As the series moves forward, more about the lead couple is revealed. Both of them are revealed to have issues that make them dangerous, resulting in Alex killing two people, and it is also hinted that Laura might have killed her own parents. Despite that, Alex tries to break the cycle by taking his baby and fleeing Tall Pines. However, he later decides to stay back with Laura, who is now the leader of the cult, which was previously headed by Evelyn.

While it is not clearly revealed why Alex decided to stay, it is speculated that he might have thought the community was the best place for him and for raising their baby.

More on this in our story.

Does Alex in Wayward stay with Laura? Details explored

Alex in Wayward is played by Mae Martin, who is also the creator of the Netflix series. In the thriller drama series, Alex is described as coming from an abusive home. His father was an abusive husband who used to beat Alex's mother, and Alex had been living with the guilt of never standing up to him and protecting his mother.

This is the reason he joined the force. He wanted to put men like his father behind bars. However, due to coming from an abusive home, Alex also is shown to have numerous bottled-up emotions and anger, which come to the fore when he thinks he or his family is in danger. While trying to get familiar with his own identity, Alex is also dealing with anger issues, which can be seen when he beats up and kills Maurice, and also injects Evelyn with a drug to kill her.

On the other hand, Evelyn also claimed that Laura had killed her own parents. While Evelyn might not be the most plausible source for this type of information, Laura does seem to be a violent person, just like Alex. After she becomes the leader of the cult, Alex has the opportunity to take his baby and leave the cultish environment. However, in the end, he decides to stay with Laura in Tall Pines.

Why did Alex stay with Laura in Wayward? Speculations explored

In the ending of Wayward, Laura becomes the leader of the cult. After going through the leap, Laura had been brainwashed, and her emotions toward her family, including her own baby, were suppressed, due to which she was ready to use the baby as a means to bring the community together.

Alex, who wanted to take the baby away, also decides to stay by Laura's side as she embarks on a dangerous new journey. The reason why Alex stayed is not revealed in the series. However, it is speculated that Alex chose to be in Tall Pines because he wanted to raise his own family, unlike how he grew up. He might have thought that the community might help break the cycle of abuse that both of the child's murderous parents grew up in.

Furthermore, another reason might be that Alex had known that he wouldn't be able to get away from Laura even if he tried, which might have influenced his decision to stay with Laura in Tall Pines.
