Wanda returns as the Queen of the Dead in the new teaser for Marvel Zombies, where she seems to be the central antagonist in a story that takes place after a zombie apocalypse ravages the Earth.
It's not the first time Wanda has been a key villain in an MCU project. In the past, Sam Raimi's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed Scarlet Witch as one of the threats standing in front of Stephen Strange. Avengers: Age of Ultron and both seasons of What If…? also didn't necessarily portray her in a positive light.
WandaVision might be the only time her character was explored beyond the evil she is capable of. It examined her trauma in the wake of Vision's loss, leading her to create a world for herself where she could find comfort, much like the charming old-school sitcoms. Some Marvel fans, therefore, have concerns about the lack of depth in presenting her character.
Despite those concerns, Wanda appears in the new Marvel Zombies teaser as the Queen of the Dead in frames that feature bright red and warm tones. She seems like the ultimate threat to the world, hoping for a fighting chance of survival. However, despite the survivors' hopes, she is seemingly out for their blood. The teaser is accompanied by a quote:
"Chaos reigns. The dead rise. The Queen of the Dead controls them all."
More details about Marvel Zombies on Disney+
Marvel Zombies is a four-part miniseries that will arrive on Disney+ soon. It expands on a chapter from Marvel's recent animated television series, What If…?, which showed the heroes getting infected by a virus. Marvel Zombies fleshes out this idea from a single episode and extends it into a four-part zombie horror project.
Its synopsis, according to Marvel Studios, reads:
"After the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague, a desperate group of survivors discover the key to bringing an end to the super-powered undead, racing across a dystopian landscape and risking life and limb to save their world."
A recent TV Insider report offers more plot details:
"The story begins when Hank Pym attempts to rescue his wife Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm, only to discover she has been infected with a quantum virus that turns her into a flesh-eating zombie. This leads to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes being infected one by one, just as Thanos then lands on a zombie-infected Earth. The episode ends with a zombified Thanos brandishing a nearly complete Infinity Gauntlet."
Here's the voice cast and characters set to appear in the show, based on what we know so far:
- Elizabeth Olsen as The Red Queen
- Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
- Dominique Thorne as Iron Heart
- Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop
- David Harbour as Red Guardian
