Marvel Zombies seems to be a continuation of the fifth episode of What If...? season 1, What If... Zombies?! If you remember that episode of the series that was streamed in September 2021, it was set in an Earth ravaged by a zombie virus that originated in the Quantum Realm and unleashed on the world as Hank Pym tried to rescue his wife, who, unknown to him, is infected.

It must be noted that What If... Zombies?! was just a 30-minute episode that followed a specific group of characters. Thus, the upcoming Marvel Zombies has a chance to expand upon to bring a larger perspective to Marvel's zombie reality.

"After the Avengers are overtaken by a zombie plague, a desperate group of survivors discover the key to bringing an end to the super-powered undead, racing across a dystopian landscape and risking life and limb to save their world."

Marvel Zombies cast and character guide:

Here are all the characters that have been confirmed to appear in Marvel Zombies:

  • Iman Vellani voices Kamala Khan

It has been known since the beginning that Kamala Khan is a part of the survivor group in the series. In Marvel Zombies, she will be voiced by Iman Vellani, the same actress who plays the character in the mainline MCU as well. In addition to her, we also see a zombie version of Carol Danvers in the trailers. Another character related to Kamala appearing in the series is Zenobia Shroff's Muneeba Khan, but her role is under wraps for now.

  • Todd Williams voices Blade Knight

One of the most exciting additions to the Marvel Zombies cast is Blade Knight. It seems that in this version of Marvel reality, Khonshu has chosen Blade as his avatar. It is unclear what happened to Marc Spector in this reality, though.

  • Simu Liu and Awkwafina voice Shang-Chi and Katy

Both Simu Liu and Awkwafina are returning in this animated series to reprise their respective Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings roles. It seems that they are a part of the survivor group, consisting of David Harbour's Red Guardian, Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, and Kari Wahlgren's Melina Vostokoff.

  • Elizabeth Olsen voices The Red Queen Wanda Maximoff

While her future with the live-action side remains unclear, Elizabeth Olsen is reprising her role as the Scarlett Witch in the MCU animated shows. What If... Zombies?! showed fans a zombie Wanda who kills both Okoye and Bucky. In one of the trailers, we can hear Kenna Ramsey's Zombie Okoye speak, meaning we can also hear Olsen flex her vocals to sound like a zombie Wanda.

  • Hudson Thames voices Spider-Man

Thames made his debut as Spider-Man in What If... Zombies?! Therefore, it makes sense that he returns to voice the same version of the wall-crawler. His role remains unknown for now.

What do we know about the animated Marvel show?

As mentioned earlier, the animated show is the only spin-off out of all 26 episodes of What If...? It remains unknown if there's a time jump between the What If...? zombie episode and the beginning of the series or not. However, showrunner Bryan Andrews teased some surprises in an August 14, 2025, interview:

“I would hope so, yes. I'm sure there's some things that… I'm not as up to date with all the stuff that's already out, but I bet you dollars to donuts that they haven't mentioned, but I would hope that they haven't mentioned a couple of things that we do want to be an honest surprise. So, we'll see. It's up to marketing and such on how they want to let some of these secrets come out, but yeah. We hope that there are some surprises still left, so you can see the episode and go, ‘What?’ And then next thing you know, bing, and now you can purchase, you know, as opposed to purchase first before you even see the context in the episode.”

Marvel Zombies is a miniseries consisting of four episodes that will be released together on September 24, 2025, on Disney+.
