Doc Season 2 Episode 1 opens at Westside Hospital as troubled Dr. Amy Larsen continues to battle, trying to reconcile a broken past with the professional and personal pressures of her current world. Action escalates as a desperate father, Alex, disarms a security officer and takes a gun and decides he will do whatever it takes to get his daughter, Rosie, a vital heart transplant.
Alex’s rampage is quick and brutal. He incapacitates Dr. Jake Heller and takes Amy, Sonya, and nurse Julie hostage. Suspense escalates as first-year resident TJ steps in and is seriously injured, his femoral artery torn apart with a bullet. While Amy is coerced into a caretaker role at gunpoint, the desperation of Alex comes through as he calls Amy's ex-husband and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Hamda, and orders the transplant of Rosie while trading the safety of people on the floor for his daughter’s surgery.
As the police hesitate to enter the premises, Amy tries to bond with Alex by discussing her loss of memory, attempting to humanize herself subtly. In the meantime, Nora, Michael’s wife, is in premature labor, which heightens the emotional stakes in the hospital. Within the operating room, Amy and the medical staff are working against time to extract abscesses from Rosie’s lungs, struggling with medical uncertainty as well as the unpredictable nature of Alex.
The surgery goes well, yet is plagued by ongoing danger as TJ's life lies in the balance due to critical blood loss. Alex, temporarily calmed by the medical progress, permits Amy to check with TJ, still with a grave prognosis.
