Harry Potter and the Cursed Child received a major boost for its Broadway performance by having Tom Felton return in the role of Draco Malfoy. However, it is important to note that Felton is reprising the role in the Cursed Child play for only 19 weeks. This has fans wondering if the actor will return to the Wizarding World with the HBO series as well. Well, honestly, we can't say for now.
As of now, the HBO Harry Potter show is on track to begin filming this summer, and the character of Lucius Malfoy is introduced only in the second book, Chamber of Secrets. However, the HBO series has a chance to plant seeds for future characters in the first season itself, which adapts the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Does Tom Felton have a chance to play Lucius Malfoy in the HBO Harry Potter show?
When Felton reprises his role in the Cursed Child play, it will be his ninth time playing the role of Draco. Felton himself addressed this return in an interview with Today on June 5, 2025:
“It’s very much a pinch-me situation. I keep thinking I’m dreaming. I let go of that character 16 years ago, and now I get to step back into his shoes, as a father this time, in a new story.”
Furthermore, the Draco Malfoy actor also released an official statement that expressed a similar sentiment:
“Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.”
Then, it continued:
“It’s surreal to be stepping back into his shoes — and of course his iconic platinum-blond hair — and I am thrilled to be able to see his story through and to share it with the greatest fan community in the world. I look forward to joining this incredible company and being a part of the Broadway community.”
This casting by the people involved in the play has some fans hopeful that Tom Felton can return to the Wizarding World through the HBO Harry Potter show, but as Draco's father, Lucius Malfoy, a role that was played by The White Lotus Season 3 actor Jason Isaacs in six out of eight Harry Potter movies. Felton reprising the role of adult Draco in Cursed Child does hint he is open to returning to the franchise.
Therefore, Felton might have a role in the HBO series as well, but it remains unconfirmed as of now.
It is rumored that Tom Felton is involved in the HBO series behind the scenes:
In April 2025, The Daily Mail published a report that Tom Felton was indeed involved in the HBO Wizarding World series, but behind the scenes rather than as an actor. HBO was considering him to be involved in making behind-the-scenes content for the series. But it is to be noted that it is just a rumor, and thus, it shouldn't be taken as news until confirmed officially.
Moreover, that was almost two months ago, and it is possible that things have changed, and the people involved in the series are considering casting Felton as Lucius as well.
The HBO Harry Potter show hasn't begun filming yet. It is expected to start this Summer, though. Thus, it shouldn't be long before we learn what the series looks like.
