BBC One's historical period drama Dope Girls, based on Marek Kohn's 1992 nonfiction book The Birth of the British Drug Underground, followed the early 20th-century Soho, where women were forced to enter into an illicit life of nightclubs, drugs, and alcohol after World War I.
In the Dope Girls finale, Kate was forced to take the next steps to secure the future of 'The 33', which was being plagued by Luca Salucci's illegal antics and drugs. After he discovered that Kate had killed Silvio, he had the upper hand over her, and she needed to take adequate measures to stop him before it was too late.
As Kate strategized about her next steps, her daughter Billie also made an important decision about her future as a performer.
More on this in our story.
Dope Girls ending explained: Kate's manipulation leads to Luca's death
Luca was one of the biggest problems for Kate as he was not only harassing the dancers at her nightclub but also making her business difficult. After he humiliated Eddie during a performance, Kate knew she had to eliminate this problem once and for all.
In the Dope Girls finale, Kate took advantage of Damaso's feelings for her and manipulated him into killing his brother. While Luca was forcing Kate to sell his drugs at her nightclub, he also knew that she had killed Damaso's son, which left her with no choice but to manipulate Damaso into killing Luca.
Since Damaso was already jealous of his brother, as he was favoured by their mother, he was raging with anger. Luca's continued mockery of Damaso (for not fighting in the War) and Kate's manipulation led him to take a fatal shot at his brother.
Dope Girls ending explained: A mother-daughter reunion
While Billie found her place in Soho, she could not forgive Kate for abandoning her as a child. Moreover, she only approached her daughter when she needed help, and also ruined her dream of doing her expressionist dance show.
After Billie got an opportunity to star in a play adapted from Cleopatra in America, she was ready to move out of Soho and leave the toxic presence of her mother. However, after she discovered Kate's efforts to get rid of Luca, she realised that her mother helped her get out of waitressing at The Danton. In the Dope Girls finale, Kate even apologizes to her daughter for abandoning her in childhood and compliments her for being an amazing performer.
This bridges the gap between the mother-daughter duo, and Billie decides to stay at 'The 33', helping her mother run the most successful nightclub in Soho.
Dope Girls ending explained: Kate and Violet join hands
The biggest twist in the Dope Girls finale featured an unlikely partnership between Kate and Violet. After Violet realised that her boss was a mere puppet in the hands of the Saluccis and had also killed Lily, she reconsidered her decision to infiltrate The 33. She realised that while she got an undercover job to investigate Silvio's murder, she could not protect the women of Soho, which was her main aim and dream.
This realisation prompted Violet to come clean to Kate, and she disclosed her undercover assignment to the nightclub owner. While Kate was frantic at first, she suggested a partnership between them to run Soho and protect the women.
Luca and Frank's deaths were the first step in the right direction, and Violet agrees to help Kate from the shadows while being adversaries in public. Dope Girls ends on a hopeful note for both Kate and Violet, who are now their boss.
