The viewers’ favorite attorney has returned to television as Elsbeth Season 3 has premiered on CBS. The new chapter of the comedy drama started with a bang as Elsbeth delved into the world of late-night shows, where a murder took place.
The premiere featured guest appearances by Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Andy Richter, who all joined the lead, Carrie Preston, for a thrilling episode. Titled Yes, And…, the episode has set the bar high and fulfilled the expectations of the audience who waited for the show’s return for months.
Now that the season is off to a great start, showrunner Jonathan Tolins has talked about what to expect from the rest of the episodes. In an interview with Deadline, the executive producer revealed that the writing team is willing to take more risks with the story’s format in Elsbeth Season 3:
“We’re also taking more risks with the format this season, finding ways to keep the show surprising. I’m finding that the show — especially with Carrie Preston’s incredible performance leading the way — can handle everything we throw at it.”

During the interview, Jonathan Tolins added that he is happy with the way Elsbeth Season 3 is panning out, and also highlighted how the show keeps getting better, which attracts more celebrity cameos:
“I’m very proud of the new season so far. I think we’re doing what we’ve always done, but we’re getting better at it. We continue to attract incredible guest stars and we’re finding more fascinating slices of the culture to explore.”
The series started as a spin-off of The Good Wife and The Good Fight, but has been able to earn its own fandom, thanks to the performance of Carrie Preston and the show’s blend of mystery, humor, and drama.
In the first episode of Elsbeth Season 3, real-life late-night host Stephen Colbert stars as the anchor of Way Late with Scotty Bristol. Scotty is infamous for his brash attitude and for his rude behavior with his crew, especially with his sidekick Mickey Muntz, played by Andy Richter.
Scotty’s constant digs at Mickey are not liked by Mickey’s wife, and the show’s head writer, Laurel Hammond-Muntz, played by Amy Sedaris. Amy eventually ends up killing Scotty, and Elsbeth is tasked with finding out the culprit. Talking about Colbert’s role on the show, Tolins said:
“Since we would only have Colbert for a limited amount of time, we thought playing with his real persona, and the audience’s usual experience of him, would maximize the impact of his appearance.”
Elsbeth Season 3 Episode 2 will now premiere on CBS on October 16, 2025. Titled Doll Day Afternoon, it will feature David Cross and Scott Campbell as guest stars. The episode will be set at a toy store where a rift happens between two men.
Apart from Carrie Preston, the show stars Wendell Pierce as Charles Wallace Wagner. Carra Patterson, who was a series regular as Kaya Blanke for two seasons, has now left the show and will only be making some guest appearances in the new season.
