Brilliant Minds fans celebrated the latest surprise casting announcement as no one saw this coming. The casting is that of actor Eric Dane, who is still recognized for playing Dr. Mark Sloan in the long-running and iconic ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy. However, in the NBC medical drama, Dane is playing a character who may hit the actor close to home.
On October 20, 2025, it was revealed that Eric Dane will be a guest star in the ninth episode of the second season. Instead of a doctor, Dane will be playing a patient diagnosed with ALS in Brilliant Minds Season 2, Episode 9.

NBC confirmed the Grey's Anatomy actor's role in the ninth episode of the second season by releasing some images from the episode. They further revealed that his guest role will be a patient who has been diagnosed with ALS. The main focus of the episode will supposedly be about Eric Dane's character, Matthew, a firefighter who is struggling to reveal to his family that he is suffering from ALS.
The role of an ALS patient hits close to Eric Dane's life, as even the actor was diagnosed with the medical condition in April this year. For the uninitiated, Mayo Clinic describes ALS as:
"Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (a-my-o-TROE-fik LAT-ur-ul skluh-ROE-sis), known as ALS, is a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS causes loss of muscle control. The disease gets worse over time."
The Mayo Clinic also reveals that a cure for ALS hasn't been discovered as of now. This is why the upcoming Brilliant Minds episode might be one of the series' emotional episodes. Back in April, Eric Dane released this statement to his fans when they learned about his ALS diagnosis:
"I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”
As of now, we have to wait for a while for the episode featuring Dane, as only five episodes have been made available, and we already know that the ninth episode is airing on November 24, 2025. Thus, Grey's Anatomy fans have to wait for a month to see one of their favorite actors in Brilliant Minds Season 2.
