The final season of Prime Video’s The Boys is currently in production, and fans are excited to find out how the show will conclude the story of Butcher, Homelander, and the others. The show, which premiered in 2019, has aired four seasons so far, earning critical acclaim and commercial success.

Showrunner Eric Kripke has now talked about the final episode of the series, revealing that he took inspiration from Breaking Bad to figure out a way to tie all the loose ends in the finale.

While appearing on Sony’s Creator to Creator podcast, Kripke said the AMC drama ensured that all the plot points were paid off in the last season, and that is exactly what he is trying to achieve with The Boys.

Breaking Bad is counted among of the greatest television shows of all time. The series aired five seasons on AMC between 2008 and 2013, and currently holds a stellar 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 9.5 rating on IMDb.

Eric Kripke appeared on the podcast alongside Shawn Ryan, the creator of Netflix’s The Night Agent. Discussing what his biggest concern was about writing The Boys series finale, Kripke said he had to find a way to conclude all the plot points:

“How do you tie up the stories? How do you do it in a way that is emotional and satisfying? How do you do it in a way that creates — frankly — the illusion that some detail that you dropped in Season 1 or Season 2 is now suddenly coming back to pay off?”

The showrunner said he eventually took inspiration from Breaking Bad and even got in touch with the show’s writers, who helped him figure out the perfect series finale for The Boys:

“Breaking Bad, to me, is as good as a show gets, and I was able to ask some of those writers, I’m like, ‘The way you tied everything together, how did you do that?’ And they said, ‘Oh, we had just a list of loose ends on our board that we had no idea what to do with them, that we would keep compiling over the seasons.”

He added:

“And then when it came time to do the final season, we would just start checking them off of like how do we pay them off, cuz we’re gonna look like geniuses because the Season 2 storyline becomes this.’”

Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book series of the same name, The Boys is a satire on the superhero genre, which showcases what would happen if some humans got superpowers and used them for questionable purposes. The show is also famous for its commentary on corporate greed and societal issues.

The fifth and final season of the show is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2026. The show stars the likes of Karl Urban, Antony Starr, Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Capone, and Colby Minifie.

The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video, while Breaking Bad is streaming on Netflix.
