CBS’ Boston Blue brings back Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan, who moves from New York to Boston and collaborates with Lena Silver to investigate some high-stakes cases. While the show features a fresh cast, eagle-eyed fans have noticed that another actor from Blue Bloods is appearing in the spin-off, albeit in a new role.

Actor Ernie Hudson, who played a guest role as Principal Darryl Ward in one of the episodes of the original series, is a main cast member on Boston Blue and portrays Reverend Edwin Peters, Lena Silver’s grandfather.

Hudson has now talked about playing two different characters in the same franchise. In an interview with US Weekly, the actor stated that Edwin Peters and Darryl Ward have distinct personalities, and he does not mind playing two characters in one franchise, as the spin-off has a completely different world:

“I haven’t seen that episode [of Blue Bloods] — if ever — but no. So it was a very, very different character. This is a different family — obviously — in Boston. This guy is a just very, very different guy than I remember that character to be. I never like to say, ‘Forget anything I’ve done.’ But it’s just a very different universe and different world.”

Ernie Hudson earlier appeared in Blue Bloods Season 8 Episode 14, School of Hard Knocks, as Principal Darryl Ward. After a student was shot dead by a gang member in his school, Darryl met Danny and Maria Baez to discuss the situation.

In Boston Blue Episode 1, he once again meets Danny, but as a new character, Reverend Edwin Peters, who is a pastor at a church in Boston and the grandfather of Danny’s new working partner, Lena Silver. Talking about his role in Blue Bloods, Hudson joked that Darryl looked distressed, and probably that is why he was cast in the show:

“That was a character who looked like me, and I think he was distressed.”

On the other hand, as per Hudson, Edwin is an important character who brings a religious aspect into the law enforcement theme of Boston Blue:

“This is a guy who is — in my mind — just very committed to the community. He is certainly involved in his church community, even though his family has converted to Judaism, which is kind of interesting for him coming from generational traditions. But I think I like the idea of bringing that perspective into law enforcement.”

Apart from Blue Bloods and Boston Blue, Hudson has been seen in shows like Quantum Leap, Hot Streets, Grace and Frankie, Mob City, and Last Resort. He has also starred in films like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, The Retirement Plan, and Champions.

Apart from Hudson, Boston Blue stars Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan, Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver, Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan, Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, and Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver.
