The Punisher special, which is set to release on Disney+, received a massive update on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Nexus Point News, an online news portal, published a report stating that the special following Frank Castle will begin production sometime in mid-July of this year. This would mean that the special will be ready for its early 2026 release date.

It has been known for a while that Marvel was working on a solo special headlined by the Punisher even before the finale of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. The post-credit scene of the Born Again Season 1 sets up the events of the special as Frank, who is in Wilson Fisk's custody, manages to escape captivity by injuring the guard.

The Punisher special's latest rumor explained:

As stated before, it was the Nexus Point News that published a report stating that the Frank Castle solo special might begin filming sometime in mid-July in New York, the same city where Daredevil: Born Again's second season is also filming. Since The Punisher solo is a special presentation on the lines of Werewolf by Night, its production schedule might not be as long as the shows.

As of now, details of this presentation are under wraps, but we do know that the special will follow Frank trying to navigate a New York that is under curfew enacted by Mayor Wilson Fisk. However, it is unclear as of now whether the solo will release before, during, or after Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Moreover, Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane addressed the Punisher's future in the MCU.

What did Dario Scardapane say about Frank Castle's future in the MCU?

Just three days after the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale, Scardapane sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly. There, the showrunner discussed a wide range of topics, including Frank Castle's solo special, which is set to stream on Disney+ sometime next year. When asked if the post-credit scene in the season 1 finale was a setupfor the special, he replied:

"No, it was part of a larger Marvel idea with regards to Jon, the Punisher, and keeping him in the world. He gets taken by the task force, and we didn't want to just have him sit on that island. We needed to give you an idea that Frank is not going to stay locked up for long. It came pretty late in the process, but it became very clear very quickly that this was the thing to do both in terms of telling the story of Daredevil and what's going to come next for Frank and the Punisher."

Furthermore, the Entertainment Weekly journalist asked the showrunner if Frank Castle is involved in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. To this, the showrunner gave this strange answer:

"I don't know. I mean, I think that a lot of what would be fair to assume for an audience member is that post-credit sequence lays right into what the Punisher special is going to be."

Apart from the special, we also know that Frank Castle is also appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in addition to his possible inclusion in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
