Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has an uphill task in connecting to the ending of The Defenders

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently filming in New York, and some fans believe that the series will serve as a reunion for The Defenders. For the uninitiated, the Netflix Marvel Universe kicked off with Daredevil Season 1 in 2015. After that, the first season of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist soon followed. Then, Daredevil Season 2 was released in 2016, and it built towards The Defenders.

Released in 2017, The Defenders was a crossover series in which Matt Murdock, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Danny Rand (Iron Fist) teamed up to take down The Hand. In the finale of the team-up series, Matt Murdock sacrifices himself by staying inside a collapsing building, making the other heroes believe that he is dead. However, the first episode of Daredevil Season 3 reveals that Matt is alive.

But since season 3, neither Daredevil nor any of his supporting characters appeared or were referred to in Luke Cage Season 2, Iron Fist 2, and Jessica Jones Seasons 2 and 3. The exception being The Punisher Seasons 1 and 2, where Karen Page appeared. But Jessica Jones is confirmed to appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.

Charlie Cox addressed Jessica's return in Deadline's podcast named Crew Call, on June 5, 2025. During this podcast appearance, Charlie Cox brought up a good point: will Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 bring up Matt Murdock's sacrifice in The Defenders finale? Well, we will learn the answer only by watching the MCU series.

What did Daredevil: Born Again Season 2's Charlie Cox say?

As mentioned above, Matt Murdock/Daredevil actor Charlie Cox was the guest on the Crew Call podcast on June 5, 2025. There, the actor addressed Jessica Jones' return in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, which is currently under production in New York City. One of the points that Cox raised was interesting, considering how The Defenders finale concluded.

The point he raised was about how Jessica Jones learned that Matt Murdock is still alive. His exact words were:

“When did Jessica Jones find out that I’m not dead? At the end of Defenders, everyone assumes I’m dead.”

How Born Again Season 2 can explain The Defenders finale?

While these comments could be taken in a humorous context, it is worth noting that there is an explanation. More than five years have passed between The Defenders and the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. The opening scene of Born Again Season 1 implies that Matt has been active as Daredevil for a considerable time.

Thus, Jessica would've learnt that Matt has been alive before they finally reunite after all this time in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Then Charlie Cox spoke about the character dynamic between Matt and Jessica in Born Again Season 2:

“There’s a mutual respect for one another. She finds him overly serious and too much of a choir boy, and he finds her to be crass and making light of too many serious situations; she’s more antihero than hero.”

Who is expected to appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?

We already know that Jessica Jones is appearing in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. Other than that, several fans are theorizing that Luke Cage and Iron Fist are also appearing in season 2, making it a secret reunion of The Defenders. But it is imperative to note that Luke and Danny's return hasn't been officially confirmed yet.
