Extraction: Everything we know so far about the Netflix series following 11 major cast additions

Fans got a major update about the Extraction show on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, as eleven new members joined its cast. Set in Libya, the show is executive-produced and written by its showrunner, Glen Mazzara.

Other creatives involved behind the scenes of the series are the director responsible for directing the franchise's two movies, Sam Hargrave, Peter Schwerin, The Russo Brothers (along with their sister, Angela Russo-Otstot), Scott Nemes, Eric Gitter, and Chris Castaldi.

What do we know about the Netflix series?

The show takes place in the same universe as the movie starring Chris Hemsworth franchise. But fans will meet a different character altogether, the mercenary played by Omar Sy, who is attempting to rescue some hostages in Libya. The officially released logline for the series reads:

“In this action-packed thriller, a mercenary (Sy) embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting deep emotional wounds. The series explores the trauma, betrayal, and moral conflicts of characters pushed to the edge.”

As mentioned before, the showrunner, executive producer, and writer is the same: Glen Mazzara. But the biggest creatives associated with the show are the Russo Brothers, who are currently busy with their Marvel return, Avengers: Doomsday, and Secret Wars. Netflix's vice president of Scripted Series, Peter Friedlander, released this statement in February:

“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the ‘Extraction’ universe. With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the ‘Extraction’ franchise.”

Angela Russo-Otstot, who is also AGBO's chief creative officer, released this statement in response to Friedlander's statement:

“AGBO is grateful to collaborate once again with our partners at Netflix, this time to expand the ‘Extraction’ universe into a new medium. We were inspired to tell more stories in this global franchise, further exploring heroic yet flawed mercenaries who illuminate universal themes. Glen Mazzara truly excels at sophisticated and nuanced explorations in the genre series space, and we are thrilled to have the exceptional talents of Omar Sy at the center of our action-packed, multi-narrative mission.”

Who is the Extraction series's showrunner, Glen Mazzara?

Glen Mazzara has been around in the TV industry for nearly two decades, as he was involved in the acclaimed crime drama The Shield as one of its executive producers. Since then, he has worked in other popular and fan-favorite series such as The Walking Dead and The Rookie.

Thus, his inclusion as the showrunner should ease the fans of the action series.
