Ahead of the Chicago Fire Season 14 premiere, Daniel Kyri, who plays Darren Ritter in the procedural drama series, has penned an emotional farewell note on his social media. Introduced in Chicago Fire Season 7, Kyri's character was initially written for three episodes or so. However, due to the character's relevance and popularity, he was upped to a series regular and was a consistent character for seven seasons. He took to Instagram and posted two snaps that remind us of Darren Ritter, and wrote,
"Okay. Yesterday, I filmed my last scenes as Ritter & I’m still so amazed that my first-ever TV gig—a role that was originally meant for just three episodes—turned into seven incredible years (SEVEN?!?!! Whatttt???!) and spanned eight seasons of this iconic show!"
He then went on to appreciate the incredible cast and crew, production team, casting team, and the writers of Chicago Fire. Additionally, he also penned down a sweet note for his character, Darren Ritter, and how it inspired him. He wrote,
"Chicago Fire changed my life. Bringing Darren Ritter to the screen has transformed & healed me in equal measure. He is a man who embodies empathy, humility, compassion, and unwavering bravery to save lives. His heroism is further fortified by the way he navigates the world—a gay Black firefighter who is proud, fierce, loyal, & whole—a possibility I never got to see onscreen in my childhood but desperately craved…"
He ended the lengthy note with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation.
"I am so humbled & proud to have portrayed you. I’m thrilled that my inner child would have looked at you each week in awe of everything you represent. You made history. Thank you so much, Darren Ritter. And goodbye."
Why is Daniel Kyri leaving Chicago Fire?
After seven seasons, Daniel Kyri is leaving Chicago Fire. The actor who portrayed Darren Ritter in the procedural drama won't be returning for Chicago Fire Season 14. However, he will be present in the early episodes of Season 14, as the show intends to give him a proper ending that honors both the character and the storyline.
Although not much is known about the actor's sudden exit from the series, according to Deadline, NBC One Chicago's recent budget cuts may be one of the pivotal reasons for Daniel Kyri's character being written out.
Ritter arrived at Firehouse 51 as a nervous rookie but soon became Engine 51's most dependable crew member. His bravery, quick wit, and warmth made him stand out. As one of the openly gay black characters, Ritter brought meaningful representation to the screen.
Not just Kyri, but Jake Lockett, who plays Sam Carver in Chicago Fire, has been written out of the series.
Cast shakeups due to budget constraints are not new for long-running drama, but losing Ritter is significant. His balance of heart and authenticity left an imprint on the series. When he walks away, it will mark the close of a chapter that defined a part of Firehouse 51's soul.
