Foundation Season 3 Episode 8 is a simmering mystery wrapped in complete chaos. This episode transforms the galactic chess game into one that is much more personal (and deadly) as the Mule tightens his hold and disagreements over politics grow. The Mule had already separated the newlyweds Toran and Bayta last week, killed Indbur, and taken over New Terminus.
Three themes are introduced as we move into Episode 8. What are they? Day's fate on Trantor, the Mule's authority, and Gaal's gamble.
So, strap in as we recap Foundation Season 3 Episode 8!
Foundation Season 3 Episode 8 recap: Digital Seldon humiliates the Mule
The Mule, who now calls himself the emperor of chaos, takes on Digital Seldon in a cerebral fight and asks for an exact figure of his path toward galactic dominance. Ever calm, Seldon faces a bleak prospect that the Mule could take over the Empire if his victories continue on their current trajectory.
Nonetheless, the Mule is fascinated and angry by Seldon's lack of knowledge regarding Gaal. That leads to his memory being cut off.
The suspense peaks as the Mule calls Seldon "just a program."
A huge mistake! Seldon releases the null field in a cruel display of power, floating and crushing him. But instead of killing him, Seldon warns and threatens the Mule about an awful secret he might expose.
Taking Padmé's decoy twist in The Phantom Menace into consideration, this opens up the possibility of Magnifico being the real Mule. Pilou Asbaek may only be a substitute for him! We know that the Mule's empire isn't quite as secure as it seems, no matter whether or not this theory is true. He even suggests that Pritcher may be his secret pawn, and that would put Gaal very much in his sights.
Foundation Season 3 Episode 8 recap: Gaal’s risky move to face the Mule
Worried about the Mule's imminent strike, Gaal quickly saves Ignis and the Second Foundation. Her plan? Leave the Foundation's camp and face him straight up. Preem somewhat agrees but reminds her that the Mule's fascist hold on those who support him makes him prone to the public's empathy.
This is a hint that Gaal's governance may be disastrous for him!
In a shocking turn of events, Dawn turns out to be alive even though having lost his legs because of space travel.
Under mysterious orders, Bayta, now believed to be working with the Mule, takes care of him. Is this all part of another counterplay, or is she being brainwashed? Their scenes of tension suggest that Bayta's autonomy is still questioned and that the Mule's emotional control is substantial.
Foundation Season 3 Episode 8 recap: Day’s public trial turns deadly
On Trantor, the hungry for power Sunmaster is responsible for Day's violent trial in the Mycogen district. Day, who was recently accused of heresy, takes a chance by revealing Demerzel's real identity as the long-prophesied savior, Daneel.
A robotic "Brazen Head" backs up what he says, but Sunmaster, drunk with power, dismisses him and has him put to death.
In an unforgettable ending, Day is doomed to decay slowly, aka the brutal "remediation" process. Yet a few supporters have been convinced by his defense, and Songbird looks like she might be ready to take a stand.
With Sunmaster's betrayal meant to bring down the Mycogen hierarchy, Day's future is now in danger on Foundation.
