With Arnold Schwarzenegger having a long list of action films to his credit, it’s only natural that FUBAR Season 2 has drawn comparisons to his previous films. The setting of FUBAR indeed aligns closely with the kind of roles Schwarzenegger is known for and among those, True Lies has emerged as the film that has inspired the Netflix series the most.

Schwarzenegger himself admitted to this and in an interview with Hollywood Reporter, he noted that the tango scene in FUBAR Season 2 is sure to remind viewers of the iconic dance of Jamie Lee Curtis in True Lies. This serves as a clear homage to the film while adding a more comedic twist to the show.

FUBAR Season 2 works as an unofficial True Lies sequel

With all the similarities that the Netflix series shows with James Cameron’s True Lies, the dance sequence between Schwarzenegger and Carrie-Anne Moss stands out as the most remarkable one given how iconic it was in the film as well. Talking to Hollywood Reporter about the same and how FUBAR Season 2 retains a lot of the 90s aesthetic, Schwarzenegger mentioned,

“You’re absolutely correct when you talk about the show’s ’90s style. In True Lies, we had some great dance sequences. It played so well then, we thought it would play well here, too. It really was great to rehearse and prep it. The key thing with all of this is that it has to look natural. It cannot be forced. It is because we rehearsed and really prepared that we were able to do it in a very relaxed and very organic way. The big challenge is not just to pull off the dance sequence, but to pull also pull off all the dialogue because you have four pages of dialogue during this dance sequence.”

He further added,

“So you have to say the lines exactly at the same time when you make a certain move. You have to stick with that because otherwise it doesn’t edit together. So that was the really challenging thing. Because we did it so many times before we got to the set — she believes in practice, I believe in practice and in reps — so we were able to do that and at the same time have a great time.”

Schwarzenegger’s words show how the show took a cult scene from one of his most popular films and turned it into a homage that felt fresh and new in FUBAR Season 2. Show creator Nick Santora was already aware that comparisons to Schwarzenegger’s older work were inevitable and therefore he ensured that when they were bringing back the scene, it served something new while keeping the original vibe intact.

FUBAR can be streamed on Netflix.
