Cary Elwes is set to join FX’s much-anticipated Very Young Frankenstein. The series, which will be based on Mel Brooks' 1974 movie ‘Young Frankenstein’, is currently in works at FX. Elwes will portray the role of President of the United States. The series will be a reunion of sorts for Brooks and Elwes, both of whom had previously worked on the 1993 parody movie Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Brooks along with his partner Kevin Salter will be part of the new series as executive producer.

Young Frankenstein revolves around Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder), who does not want to be linked to his grandfather Victor Frankenstein, a scientist disreputably known for his many unusual experiments. One of the more notable aspects of his character is adopting a different pronunciation for his name - ‘Fronk-en-steen’. Nonetheless, he does acknowledge Victor’s legacy and even creates a monster.

What we know about Very Young Frankenstein?

FX’s Very Young Frankenstein is inspired by Mel Brooks’ hit 1974 comedy horror movie, which he co-wrote with Wilder. It is a comedic take on Frankenstein (1931) and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), which were based on the 1818 classic novel by Mary Shelley. These original films became the benchmark for monster movie genre.

Young Frankenstein follows science professor Frederick Frankenstein, who wants to stay away from his grandfather Victor Frankenstein’s legacy, as he was known for being a mad scientist with his questionable experiments that led to the creation of monsters.

When Frederick inherits his grandfather’s Transylvania castle, he takes it upon himself to help clear his infamous family name. With the help of Igor (played by Marty Feldman) and his grandfather’s journals, Frederick will go on to create his own monster.

Brooks paid homage to the 1931 James Whale movie by even shooting Young Frankenstein (1974) in black and white. The movie garnered much attention from critics and audience, and even went on to receive two Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.

In the new FX series, Cary Elwes will play the role of President of United States. Elwes is also known for portraying the role of Westley in The Princess Bride, Dr. Lawrence Gordon in Saw, Robin Hood in Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Mayor Larry Kline in Stranger Things, among others.

Michael Gruskoff, who produced the original movie, will take on the role of executive producer for FX’s Very Young Frankenstein. Disney’s 20th Television will be the studio. Stefani Robinson, of What We Do in the Shadows fame, will take on the role of showrunner, and executive produce along with Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch. Waititi will also be directing the pilot episode.
