The episode opens with one of the biggest reveals of Season 6. Sandor Clegane is alive. Turns out he was saved by Brother Ray, the septon leading the group. Sandor's a changed man now. For the first time, the Hound appears to exist outside the machinery of war, and it's a refreshing change, but it does not last long.

When he questions Brother Ray about why God hasn't punished him yet, he replies that he has and that he hears the voices/cries of a grieving mother whose son he had once killed. As he reveals his story, we understand how it mirrors Sandor's.

A group of raiders interrupts their conversation and asks Brother Ray for food and ammunition. Brother Ray selflessly gives them their dinner, and the group leaves. Sandor knows that the threat remains and warns Brother Ray. However, Brother Ray, who has given up on violence, refuses to fight against them. Things take an ugly turn when Sandor returns to their campsite, but it's too late. Raiders slaughter the villagers and leave Brother Ray hanging from the half-built sept. It's gruesome enough to awaken the old Sandor. All he can think of is revenge.
