Much of CBS' Ghosts' hearty humour and enduring charm comes from the unforgettable residents of Woodstone Mansion. Each spirit wandering its haunted hallways carries not just centuries’ worth of stories but a uniquely tragic and bizarre death that shapes their personality in the afterlife.

Each Woodstone spirit carries a tragic backstory, which makes their characters even more compelling and relatable for fans. One of the outstanding charms nailed by the sitcom is how it gradually unravels these backstories, making the narrative richer and more exciting. Be it the shocking truth about Hetty's death or the chilling reveal of Alberta's real killer, these backstories are some of the most exciting supernatural lore in Ghosts.

Here is how every Woodstone Mansion spirit died in Ghosts and got bound to the property for eternity.

Ghosts: Here's the backstory for every Woodstone Mansion spirit

1) Pete Martino: Richie Moriarty's Pete and Jay's best buddy died in 1985 after a little girl accidentally shot an arrow that plunged into his neck. The righteous travel agent and scout troop leader was using the mansion's backyard for his usual archery session with his students, when one of the girls shot an arrow that pierced his neck and he died on the spot. His protruding arrow from his neck is a dead giveaway about his accidental death in Ghosts.

2) Issac Higgintoot: Brandon Scott's Issac is a narcissistic American soldier during the Revolutionary War, who is infamously known for his rivalry with Alexander Hamilton. Issac even fought in the war but died due to dysentery on the property, which eventually became the Woodstone Mansion. Issac's death is a recurring gag on the sitcom because of his ghost power, a stinky gastrointestinal smell whenever a living walks through him.

3) Alberta Haynes: Danielle Pinnock's Prohibition-era jazz singer Alberta is one of the most delightful Woodstone spirits on Ghosts, who has a tragic death story. Unlike other spirits, Alberta was murdered by poisoning, by her boyfriend's lover, Thomas Woodstone, who is none other than Hetty's son. Alberta's murder was an intriguing mystery on the show, which was finally solved when Hetty revealed the truth.

4) Hetty Woodstone: Rebecca Wisocky's Hetty is the proud 'Lady of the Manor' and the original owner of the Woodstone Mansion. While it was initially believed that she died due to an overdose in the 1800s, she actually died by su*c*de. When Flower was stuck in a well in Ghosts Season 3, Hetty revealed her secret. She died by strangling herself with a telephone cord, which was used to rescue Flower from the well.

5) Flower: Sheila Carrasco's Flower is the beloved hippie who died on the Woodstone property in 1969. Flower wandered onto the property while attending a music festival and was killed by a bear while she was high on dr*gs. Flower's death is another recurring gag on Ghosts, as she infamously narrates the whole story to the other spirits and Sam repeatedly.

6) Trevor Lefkowitz: Asher Grodman's Trevor is the most recently deceased spirit on the property. Trevor was partying with his finance bros and they were engaged in a recreational drug game, where Trevor boldly mixed two pills and took them. His dr*g concoction turned fatal and he died on the spot, with his 'bros' dumping his body in a nearby lake.

7) Thorfinn: Devan Chandler Long's Dane-hating and pronouns-skipping character died from lightning in 1007 CE. Thorfinn is a 1000-year-old Viking who was accidentally abandoned by his shipmates and was later struck by lightning, resulting in his unique ghost power of manipulating lights. Thor is one of the oldest ghosts in the Woodstone Mansion.

8) Sassapis: Román Zaragoza's Lenape character is the only Woodstone spirit whose death is still a mystery in the sitcom. Even after four whole seasons, Ghosts has maintained mystery around Sass' death and fans are excited to learn his backstory. For now, we know that Sass belonged to a group of indigenous people (Lenape) who lived in New York Bay and died in the 1500s.

Additional spirits

In addition to the eight-core spirits, the Woodstone Mansion also harbours some supporting ghosts, who are as follows:

  • Nancy and the other Cholera/basement spirits died in the mid-1800s due to the cholera pandemic. Their dirty rags and open wounds suggest that they died in the basement of the Woodstone Mansion
  • Nigel was accidentally killed by Issac when the latter was checking his long-range musket and accidentally fired a shot that killed Nigel.
  • Stephanie died at the hands of the chainsaw murderer in 1987, when she was attending her prom with her boyfriend.
  • Carol, Pete's widow, died in the present timeline after choking on a donut hole in Sam and Jay's kitchen
  • Elias Woodstone suffocated in his basement vault in the late 1800s.

Ghosts is currently in its fifth season and airs weekly episodes every Thursday on CBS.
