If you have ever caught yourself daydreaming about walking the haunted halls of Woodstone Mansion from CBS' Ghosts, you are certainly not alone. The spooky mansion turned B&B might be plagued by wandering spirits from different eras of American history, but it invites curiosity and fascination.

We hate to break it to you but for fans wondering if the Woodstone Mansion is real, the answer is no. The filming for CBS's beloved sitcom takes place on a soundstage built in Canada. While the setting of the Woodstone Mansion is Upstate New York, it is filmed in Canada.

The Woodstone Mansion from Ghosts does not exist in real life but it was inspired by a real-life 19th-century haunted mansion in Altoona, Pennsylvania. It is even open to visitors and also earned a spot in the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

More on this in our story.

Ghosts: The real haunted house that inspired Woodstone Manor

Woodstone ghosts might look super-friendly and are the ideal candidates to be your next-door neighbors (considering they are invisible), but they have a chilling inspiration from a real-life haunted house.

Joe Port, one of the writers/executive producers on CBS' beloved spooky sitcom, grew up in Altoona, Pennsylvania and was fascinated by the secluded Victorian Baker Mansion, tucked away from the rest of the world down a small hill. After Port's first brush with the UK sitcom, he started to imagine an American version set in a haunted mansion like Baker Manor. Thus, Woodstone was born.

A report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reveals how Port even named two of his Ghosts characters (and the Woodstone Mansion's original owners) after the names of Baker Mansion’s original owners, Elias and Hetty Baker. Additionally, Hetty Baker's maiden name was Woods, which likely became the inspiration behind the iconic Woodstone Mansion.

However, the connection between Woodstone and Baker mansions goes further to the other realm as many History Museum staffers believe that Baker residents are still present at their mansion in spirit form (much like their fictional counterparts). These stories have fascinated and attracted many tourists to Baker Mansion, which even hosts an annual paranormal investigation every October.

While Woodstone Mansion is yet to introduce a 'Ghost bride', many Baker family members have reported the sightings of the 'ghost of Anna Baker' (Elias Baker's eldest daughter), who appears walking the premises in her wedding dress. Other times, her wedding dress has appeared in random places, proving just why Port chose Baker Manor as his inspiration behind CBS' Ghosts.

Is Ghosts shot at the real Baker Mansion?

While the spooky sitcom takes inspiration from the haunted mansion in Altoona, it does not appear on-screen. Ghosts is actually shot on a soundstage in Montreal in Quebec. Just like the Woodstone spirits, who are bound together for eternity, the sitcom actors feel happy to be 'packed so closely together'.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay) revealed how the sitcom Pilot was shot in an actual L.A. house near the University of Southern California. After it was picked by CBS, the house's interiors were re-created on the Montreal soundstage by production designer Zoë Sakellaropoulo.

In an interview with Country Living, Rebecca Wisocky (who plays the Lady of the Manor Hetty in Ghosts) breaks down the importance of the Woodstone Mansion:

“I like to think of that house as the 11th main character in our show, and it has so many stories. There’s so many things that happen in those walls and on that land. And our production designer, Zoë Sakellaropoulo, is just the genius. It’s the most detailed and beautiful set I’ve ever worked on.”

While the sitcom has served a few exterior episodes, the Woodstone Mansion largely remains the main filming site. Right from its dusty Victorian feel, creaky floorboards to the rustic kitchen where Jay creates his magic, everything screams haunted.

Ghosts is currently in its Season 5 and airs weekly episodes every Thursday on CBS.
