CBS's Ghosts Season 5 premiered on October 16, 2025, and introduced one twist after the other to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. The episode premiered with Jay getting ready for his demise and letting the Devil, Elias, take his soul to Hell.
However, Jay finds a way to trap the devil and break his end of the bargain to save himself. But due to unfavorable circumstances, the ghosts decide to take Jay's place so that he can live. In the end, it's Carol's sacrifice that saves Jay's life.

Ghosts Season 5 Episode 1 recap: Jay and Sam worry about his impending death
Jay made a deal with the devil in the previous season of Ghosts. The premiere of Ghosts Season 5 picks up from there, and we see Sam and Jay being worried about Jay's death. Along with them, the ghosts of the house are also seen to be sad about Jay's fate, but can also be enjoying their time, as death has been a part of their life for a while now.
However, amid all the chaos in Episode 1, there are several scenes where the characters recognise the issues that are brewing around them, such as when Sas and Thorfinn give some thoughtful advice to Patience.
Furthermore, Jay also finds a way to get out of the bargain by using the ghost trap.
Ghosts Season 5 Episode 1 recap: Jay's ghost-trapping idea fails
In Episode 1 of Ghosts Season 5, Jay decided to capture Elias in the ghost trap. He initially plans to ask Sam to capture him between his death and being taken to Hell. Later, he decides to capture Elias in the trap.
However, Elias would have to change into his ghost form to be captured in the ghost trap. To do that, Alberta lures him and convinces him to change into his ghost form so they can touch each other if he were in his ghost form. The plan was successful, and Elias turned into a ghost and was captured in the ghost trap.
However, the plan could not move forward as they later learned Carol was also in the trap, as she was taking a nap on the reclining chair. Therefore, to get Carol out, they had to free Elias as well, resulting in Jay's plan's failure.
Ghosts Season 5 Episode 1 recap: Carol's selfless act saves Jay's life
While one plan might have failed in Episode 1 of Ghosts Season 5, another plan arose. The other plan was for one of the ghosts to take Jay's place and go to Hell while Jay gets to live. Patience volunteers to take Jay's place. However, in the end, she bails out.
Later, Pete decides to sacrifice himself for his best friend and take Jay's place, but he gets scared and bails out. Seeing Pete's loyalty toward Jay, his widow, Carol, decides to take Jay's place instead.
It is one of the most heartbreaking moments in Ghosts Season 5 as Carol decides to help her husband, which she never did before. She takes his position and saves Jay's life. However, at the end, it is revealed that Carol's selfless act does not go in vain, as she is not sent to Hell but to Heaven.
