Gina Carano, known for her role in the hit Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian, might be returning to the beloved franchise soon. Carano, who played the role of Cara Dune, was fired from the hit series after making controversial political comments on X in February 2021. The actress filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm for wrongful termination and discrimination. Her case was supported and funded by tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Disney and Lucasfilm have finally settled the lawsuit with the Star Wars actor. As per Variety, the statement by Lucasfilm states,

“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Ms. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

Will Gina Carano return to the Star Wars universe?

In The Mandalorian, Carano plays the role of mercenary Cara Dune. She had a recurring role in the Star Wars spinoff series and was one of the most loved characters. She appeared in both Season 1 and Season 2. However, after her controversial post on X, she was written out of Season 3.

In February 2021, Carano, a former MMA fighter, shared a post in which she compared being a Republican to being Jewish during the Holocaust. The post drew a lot of backlash from fans, and she was dropped from the series. However, in 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination and discrimination. She sought to be recast in the Star Wars franchise and asked for $75,000 in damages.

Gina Carano took to X to share the news about the settlement of the lawsuit. She wrote,

“I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm …which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force. I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk…a man I’ve never met, who did this Good Samaritan deed for me in funding my lawsuit. Thank you Mr. Musk and @X for backing my case and asking for nothing in return…
I am humbled and grateful to God for His love and grace in this outcome. I’d like to thank you all for your unrelenting support throughout my life and career, you’ve been the heartbeat that has kept my story alive. I hope to make you proud. I am excited to flip the page and move onto the next chapter. My desires remain in the arts, which is where I hope you will join me. Yes, I’m smiling. From my heart to yours, Gina”

Based on the Lucasfilm statement, Carano could appear in a future Star Wars project. Although the Disney+ series concluded with Season 3, the movie The Mandalorian and Grogu will continue the story. The movie is scheduled to premiere in 2026, but it seems unlikely that Carano will reprise her role. However, other projects in the franchise might involve the New Republic Special Forces recruiting her again.

Star Wars series The Mandalorian is available on Disney+.
