As Leighton Murray on The Sex Lives of College Girls, Reneé Rapp delivered one of the most memorable characters on television. However, the actress decided to leave the HBO Max show in Season 3. Rapp has been tight-lipped about the real reasons behind her departure from the series, and in a recent interview, she pointed out that she was always the last to know about everything on set.
While appearing on Alex Cooper’s podcast titled Call Her Daddy, Rapp shared that she signed numerous NDAs during her time on Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble’s comedy-drama series The Sex Lives of College Girls. She mentioned that she was trying to change the subject at one point.
“Like, it was just so fun... It was awesome.”
When Cooper asked how people on the show reacted, Rapp said that they were totally fine. She recalled,
“Sometimes you just know….nothing on a set is ever a secret… At least it’s really hard to do that. Like also I was the last one finding out about things. So… I don’t really think anybody cared to be honest. I’m sure somebody did, but I don’t care.”

Reneé Rapp played the role of a wealthy queer student at Essex College named Leighton Murray in The Sex Lives of College Girls. Although she comes from a privileged background, Leighton struggles with her public image, especially regarding her sexuality. In Season 3 of the series, Murray will leave Essex to attend MIT and continue her studies.
While addressing her character’s departure from the show, Justin Noble told The Hollywood Reporter last year,
“Really, the only thing that could happen was that she would transfer to a different school. But as we started talking about it, Mindy (Kaling) and I were chatting, we’re like, ‘This is Leighton Murray we’re talking about. The only thing Leighton Murray does is win.’ There’s no world where she would leave other than to take a massive step towards what would be her best, most powerful life moving forward.”
It is interesting to note that in May 2025, Rapp released a single called ‘Leave Me Alone’ from her album called Bite Me. The lyrics of the song include the lines,
...Sign a hundred NDAs, but I still say something…I took my sex life with me, now the show ain't f*ckin...
Many fans assumed that the lines were about her time on the show. Cooper asked if anyone had tried to stop her from putting the lyrics in the song. Rapp sarcastically responded,
“No…God forbid a girl uses wordplay. Look, similar to all the bulls**t, what am I to do if not like make music that is genuinely reflective of my life? It just is.”
Rapp, playing Leighton, appeared as a regular cast member for two seasons on HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls, with additional appearances in a few episodes of Season 3. Rapp announced her departure from the series in July 2023 to focus on her music. The series was canceled after Season 3.
