9-1-1 shocked fans this year by killing off Robert "Bobby" Nash in an unexpected twist. Played by Peter Krause, the LAFD Station 118 captain was the lead of the procedural drama and, hence, nobody thought that he would be written off the show abruptly.

Since then, the audience has been thinking about how the series would move forward without Bobby. Oliver Stark, who stars in the show as firefighter Evan "Buck" Buckley, has now talked about how the upcoming 9-1-1 Season 9 will showcase the aftermath of the tragedy.

In an interview with Principle magazine, the actor revealed that the next season would focus on how everybody at the fire station supports each other in dealing with grief, while also working in a restructured department:

“It’s gonna be interesting in the sense that at the end of Season 8, we lost Peter Krause’s character. I think Season 9 is gonna be about rebuilding and growing from that, seeing how it’s possible to grow from that, and restructuring of the 118, which is the firehouse in the show, and seeing how everybody can kinda come together and try and move forward.”

During the interview, Oliver Stark added that Bobby’s departure is going to deeply affect his character, Bucky, as the captain shared a close relationship with him as a mentor. He said he wants Bucky to live up to the lessons he learned from Bobby and impart the same lessons to his subordinates:

“Bobby was so instrumental to who Buck was on the show, and I really wanna see him carry that proudly and feel like he’s doing justice to all the things that he learned through Captain Nash.”

He added:

“I want him to carry the banner and help the younger firefighters around him. We have a couple on the show, and so to almost step into that mentor role that Bobby was for Buck, I think it’s time for him to maybe start doing that for some others.”

Bobby died in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15, Lab Rats, during a biolab explosion as he got infected by a virus. Although he had the choice to save himself, he decided to protect his teammates instead and sacrificed his life in front of his wife, Athena.

Athena and the rest of the team were devastated by the incident, and the remaining episodes of Season 8 showcased how the team supported each other during the tough phase, while a funeral was organised for Bobby.

Series co-creator Tim Minear later revealed that Bobby’s death was a creative decision that was informed to actor Peter Krause, and not the other way around. He said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“He [Peter] was great. He understood creatively why I was doing it, and I was only doing it for creative reasons. I love Peter. Everyone loves Peter. Peter loves working on the show. So I mean, it's almost like Peter Krause was unfortunate collateral damage for what I had to do to Bobby, in a way.”

Apart from Oliver Stark, 9-1-1 stars Angela Bassett as Athena Grant, Aisha Hinds as Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, Kenneth Choi as Howard "Chimney" Han, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Han, Ryan Guzman as Edmundo "Eddie" Díaz, and Gavin McHugh as Christopher "Chris" Díaz.

9-1-1 Season 9 is expected to premiere on ABC in the fall of 2025.
