America's Got Talent released a tape of early release auditions on their YouTube channel, and it features a contestant named Cole Swenson. He is 23 years old and plays the guitar while singing. Judge Simon asked him if performing is his full-time job or if there's something else that he does for a living.
Cole reveals that he has been playing for smaller venues around Los Angeles for the past four years. However, his dream was to be on stages like America's Got Talent. He thanked the judges for allowing him to be up there and perform for them. Further explaining and introducing his music partner in his mother, Cole said,
"A large reason why I am pursuing music is because of my mom. She gave up her career and her dream of music, so I am able to take her place. So she is going to be here tonight playing with me."
Simon Cowell then asks his mum's name and invites her on stage. Judy is seen walking on the platform with a giant cello in her hand. Soon, the microphones were set up by the crew, and the duo started playing 'Viva la Vida,' a very popular song by Coldplay.
The performance was so moving that Mel and Howie gave Cole Swensen a yes from them. As for Simon Cowell, he had a trick up his sleeve while praising Cole's performance. He expressed,
"I think this would have been a really good audition on your own..."
At this statement, the America's Got Talent audience started booing him, and the cameras zoomed in on some of the faces who had their jaws on the floor. Soon, they even started chanting Judy's name to support her.
The judge continued,
"It would have been a really, really good audition if you had just done this on your own. However, with your mum, it was a great audition. It made everything, I don't know, way more interesting, and it actually made you, in my opinion, very cool to do that because you're not following the herd. You're doing what you wanna do, and that makes you stand out. I loved it, really loved it."
Cole Swensen gets 4 Yeses from the 4 judges on America's Got Talent
After his performance with his mum Judy, Cole Swenson had moved the judges. He was applauded for the same and got emotional by the very end of it, upon getting all 4 yeses from the America's Got Talent judges.
This means that he would get a chance to enter the subsequent rounds of the show en route to grabbing the winning title.
Commenting on his performance, Mel said that Cole had a very distinctive tone in his voice and controls it perfectly. She felt that he sailed through the song and made it his own.
Howie claimed that he loved this Coldplay song and thus loved Cole's rendition of the same even better. He said he felt like his heart was exploding, and the whole thing was really beautiful.
America's Got Talent season 20 releases episodes every week on NBC at 8 PM Eastern Time on Tuesdays. The episodes can be watched via Peacock the next day.
