Hacks Season 4 premiered with hostility between Deborah and Ava over the former's new late-night show, but their relationship slowly mended as the show progressed.
Deborah made the ultimate sacrifice for Ava in the Hacks Season 4 penultimate episode and announced the cancellation of her late-night show. While this cemented her friendship with Ava, she realized that her contract had a non-compete clause, which means that she would not be able to work anywhere for 18 months.
While Deborah eventually finds a loophole in the clause, the final moments saw a fake obituary for her. Enraged by the words used to describe her, she decides to fight back and rewrite her story.
Here is Hacks Season 4 ending explained.
Hacks Season 4 finale: How did Deborah find a loophole in her non-compete clause?
While Deborah did a good deed by trying to save Ava's job, she took a big step and announced the end of her late-night show. The show that started the enmity between the two women was finally canceled and they were back to square one.
However, Deborah's non-compete clause kept her from working for 18 months, which was driving her mad. While she initially took her contract to many lawyers, nobody was of help and she became increasingly depressed because she could not work and perform anymore.
While Ava tried to inspire her, Deborah did not want to write new material, knowing that she could not try out in front of an audience. However, the Hacks Season 4 finale took a turn and Deborah decided to take a vacation with Ava to Hawaii.
The two women get on a plane and while Ava was excited to take a vacation, she realizes that they have landed in Singapore. Deborah reveals that she has found a loophole in her contract. She can perform for a foreign audience because it would be the translator who would actually be performing it.
This loophole works wonders for the two women, with Deborah writing new material and performing it for a foreign audience with the help of a translator. The women have the best time of their lives performing, drinking and partying in Singapore's casinos.
However, the Hacks Season 4 finale again built up to a conflict when Ava starts to feel stuck in this new life. When she suggests that they return to their normal life, Deborah lashes out at her and asks her to leave her alone in Singapore.
Hacks Season 4 finale: What does Deborah's obituary mean for her future?
After their big fight, Ava wakes up to thousands of messages and missed calls and she learns from Jimmy that TMZ has published an obituary for Deborah. However, when she rushes back to Deborah's room, she is alive and well.
Deborah is furious with TMZ's obituary because of the words chosen to describe her:
"Vance's last few years have been marked by extremes. The high of becoming the first female late-night host and the low of abruptly quitting the show on-air, which led to the demise of the entire franchise."
Deborah is furious that the obituary called her ''late-night show killer'' and this ignites a newfound motivation in her. While Deborah had become quite comfortable in Singapore, this was just her way to escape the problems in her normal life.
The reason she lashed out at Ava was that she was too afraid to go back to her normal life because she would not be allowed to work there. However, the fake obituary made her realise how the world would remember her if she actually died and this ignited a passion to fight back and rewrite her story.
She asks Ava that they have some 'rewriting' to do, suggesting a new battle in their life in Hacks Season 5.
