The fifth season of Hacks is moving forward. Max confirmed the news in September 2025 with a short post on X, a simple message that placed the show back in the spotlight. It was not a detailed statement, but it was enough to mark the start of a new stage for the award-winning comedy.

This update came while the series was still strong among Max’s originals. Hacks had already reached a status that very few comedies hold. Its mix of sharp dialogue and strong performances kept the audience interested through four seasons. The official note about production created the sense that Deborah Vance and Ava Daniels still had more to show, even after a storyline that seemed to close some arcs.

The renewal was not a surprise to those following its performance. Season 4 had only just finished airing when Season 5 was announced, but the confirmation had already arrived earlier, in May 2025. It happened before the finale even reached the screen. At that time, reports showed the comedy sitting in the Top 5 in the United States and the Top 10 worldwide. TV Insider pointed out that the numbers kept rising each week. It was a sign that the series had momentum, and Max acted quickly to secure more episodes.

The production for the series has officially begun from September 2025.

Hacks Season 5 filming begins

Filming began on September 23, 2025. In New York, and people spotted Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder with cameras around. Phones went up, videos came out, and they spread almost instantly. Nothing polished. Just a street, some movement, a few quick shots. Still, it showed production was happening. The showrunners had already said Las Vegas would stay in the picture. With New York showing up too, both cities are now part of the season.

A final chapter

During the 2025 Emmys, Hannah Einbinder spoke on the red carpet and said that Season 5 will be the last. Max itself has not made an official statement to confirm this, but the actress’s words were picked up by Variety and People. Einbinder also commented that filming was about to begin, placing the news of production and the farewell side by side.

Storyline not yet revealed

There is no official synopsis for the upcoming season. What is known so far comes directly from the creative team. In an interview with TV Insider, the showrunners confirmed that Deborah Vance will return to Las Vegas. The New York scenes, already seen in production footage, show that part of the narrative will also be set outside the regular space of the show. How much of the season will take place in one city or the other remains to be clarified.

Cast and possible returns

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are confirmed in their leading roles. Other names have not been officially listed. TV Insider recalled the actors who appeared in Season 4, including Paul W. Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Tony Goldwyn, and Helen Hunt. Whether they return for the fifth season is something that will only be confirmed when the full cast is announced.

Behind the scenes

The series continues under the leadership of Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky. The trio not only created Hacks but remain active in guiding its development. Alongside them are executive producers Michael Schur, David Miner, Morgan Sackett, Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Joe Mande. Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, is again the producing studio working in partnership with Max.

When the renewal was announced, Sarah Aubrey from Max spoke about it, calling attention to the cast, the crew, and the partners involved. Erin Underhill from Universal Television also commented, saying the series keeps getting sharper as the seasons go on.

Release expectations

No release date has been set. What people know for sure is that cameras are rolling and new episodes will show up on Max once the work is finished. Some sites, like Cosmopolitan, pointed to 2026 as a possible year. That is only talk for now, since Max and the producers have not said anything official.

Conclusion

With five seasons already secured, Hacks holds its place as one of Max’s most notable comedies. The early renewal, the continuation of the story of Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, and the confirmed filming in both New York and Las Vegas underline the scale of the production.

If Season 5 does turn out to be the last, as Hannah Einbinder mentioned, the series ends with recognition from critics and viewers. Filming is underway now. The focus moves to the next updates, like which actors will return, when the season will be released, and how the story of Deborah and Ava will finally be closed. Follow us for more updates.
