Had I Not Seen the Sun is Netflix's latest Taiwanese drama, which released its Part 1 (Episodes 1-10) on November 13. Part 2 (Episodes 11-20) is set to premiere in December 2025, which will bring this gritty psychological thriller series to its conclusion.

Had I Not Seen the Sun follows two timelines, in 2007 and 2023. The story follows serial killer Li Jen-yao, a death row inmate who confessed to the killing of his father and several other victims, which earned him the nickname of Rainstorm killer. Jen-yao is held at a super-security prison and despite his voluntary confession, he has not revealed the motive behind his crimes, creating a mystery around him.

Nine years after his imprisonment, Jen-yao has finally agreed to an interview with a documentary crew, thanks to Chou Pin-yu, a junior employee at her company. As Pin-yu and her director begin interviewing Jen-yao, we learn about his traumatic past and his romance with one of his classmates Chiang Hsiao Tung. As Pin-yu begins spending her time with Jen-yao, she starts having strange dreams about him and experiences paranormal activity in her new house.

As Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 continues, Pin-yu is haunted by a young woman in a school dress, who is later revealed to be Hsiao Tung.

Here is the complete Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 ending explained and how it sets the concluding part of this gritty tale.

Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 expanded on Jen-yao’s traumatic childhood

Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 begins to unfold Jen-yao's story as he opens up in front of his interviewers. Jen-yao grew up in an abusive home and had a traumatic childhood because of his father, who constantly beat up his mother. While Jen-yao felt bad about his mother, he was young and not strong enough to stand up in front of his father. Additionally, Jen-yao's father also owed money to a gangster named Big K, who would regularly stop by their house to collect his debt. One day, Jen-yao lured the gangsters to his father to put an end to his reign. To his surprise, Jen-yao's parents had already escaped to Taipei. The teenager was heartbroken to learn that even his mother had abandoned him.

Jen-yao's troubling years did not stop here and the worst was yet to come for him in Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1. While his father had made a ton of money abroad, it was made through illegal means, leading to more men looking after him. However, Jen-yao's father found a simple solution to his problem. Big K was ready to pay all his debt off, only if he would frame his son for dr*g possession. Without giving a second thought, Jen-yao's father planted half a million Taiwanese dollars and drugs on him, which were duly found by two police officers, turning Jen-yao into a fugitive and a criminal in his teenage years.

A major chunk of Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 featured Jen-yao's formative years after he was abandoned by his parents. During those lonely years, Jen-yao formed a genuine connection with his classmate Hsiao-tung, who was a gifted ballerina. While he initially tried to repress his romantic feelings, the couple realized that it was true love. As Hsiao-tung showed genuine care and love for Jen-yao, their bond grew strong. However, Ouyang Ti, son of a corrupt politician, also had eyes on Hsiao-tung. Her proximity to Jen-yao made him Ouyang-Ti's target and he asked Big K to frame him in a big crime. Since Big K worked for Ouyang-Ti's father, he had no option but to frame Jen-yao for dr*g possession.

Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 revealed how one night Big K forced Jen-yao to take dr*gs and photographed him while he was under their influence. Big K warned Jen-yao on Ouyang-Ti's behalf to stay away from Hsiao-tung or these photos will find their way to the police. When Jen-yao confessed his predicament to Hsiao-tung, she was determined to save her boyfriend and hatched a plan to lure Ouyang-Ti with a date.

Ouyang-Ti was excited when Hsiao-tung asked him on a date but little did he know that she planned to delete Jen-yao's photo from his phone in Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1. On her date with Ouyang-Ti, Hsiao-tung is almost successful in deleting the photo but gets caught in the act. Ouyang-ti is enraged by Hsiao-tung's actions and forces himself on her. A drunk Ouyang-ti and his friends s*xually assault Hsiao-tung. They even make a horrific video of their dirty actions and upload it to the Internet later.

Hsiao-tung and her family are devastated after this incident but the police do not interfere because of Ouyang’s family's reputation and power in the city. Left with no choice, Hsiao-tung and her family are forced to move away from Taichung. A depressed Jen-yao sees his beloved moving away from her but promises to avenge and reunite with her five years later.

Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 ends on a shocking cliffhanger

After his painful separation, Jen-yao was consumed with revenge. He delivers on his promise and eventually stabs Ouyang Ti but he survives. Jen-yao is taken to juvenile prison but as we know from the present timeline, he delivered on his promise and killed his father and Hsiao-tung's assaulters. However, this complete storyline was left for Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 2.

The narrative in Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 shifted to 2014, days after Jen-yao was released from prison. While he was eight months late in delivering his promise of reuniting with his girlfriend, he visited the promised place. He notices the decoration done by Hsiao-tung and realizes that she had waited for him at their spot.

While Jen-yao is heartbroken to miss their reunion, a butterfly guides him to somebody and he feels that her beloved is near. However, the butterfly brings him to a visually impaired woman named Hsia Tien-ching, who asks his help in reaching the radio station where she is about to host a show. As Jen-yao helps her, he sees a butterfly tattoo on her middle finger, the same as Hsiao-tung.

Had I Not Seen the Sun Part 1 concludes on this exciting cliffhanger that suggests the blind woman is actually Hsiao-tung. But what happened to her and why did she not recognize Jen-yao? What is Pin-yu's connection to Jen-yao and why is she having strange dreams about him?
