The white halls of Lumon’s severed floor and its many inhabitants have garnered a dedicated fan following. Apple TV+’s Severance, which recently concluded its Season 2, is a critically acclaimed series that has already been renewed for Season 3.
Severance revolves around a biotechnology company called Lumon Industries where the employees go through a medical procedure called ‘severance’, which ensures that they carry no memories of the outside world while at work and vice versa. Dan Erickson, creator of the show shares that during Season 1, the cast did not know about the many twists in the storyline.
During the Burning Questions segment for BuzzFeed Celeb, the cast and creators of Severance spoken about their experience on Season 1. Dan Erickson shared,
“Well, we had it pretty well mapped out by that point. I don’t know how much you guys knew, though. I feel like it was sort of case by case what you guys wanted to know and didn’t wanna know.”
Severance premiered on Apple TV+ on February 18, 2022. The second season released on the streaming platform after three years and received raving reviews. After the finale aired on March 21, 2025, the series was renewed for Season 3.
Severance cast and crew were elated with the response
During the interview, the cast shared that they did not know of the many twists in the storylines and learnt about these when the show aired. Jen Tullock, who portrays the role of Devon, shared,
“My character’s on the outside world the entire time. I thought I didn’t need to be privy to what was happening on the inside if she wasn’t. And so I... kind of intentionally kept myself away from some of the buttons on some of the storylines towards the end of the season. So, I watched it with friends for the first time and there were a couple of twists where I was like, oh, cause I didn’t know.”
Ben Stiller, who executive-produced and directed the sci-fi series, shared that while making the show he was not sure if people would watch it. He said,
“You know, when we were making the show nobody knew we were making the show or really cared that we were making the show, cause we were just making it in our bubble and shooting the whole series.… the twists and turns were like, okay well hopefully people think this is cool, but ...the show didn’t really exist for anybody except for us making it. And we were doing it for about a year and a half altogether. So, it was, after a while I was like, ah, I wonder if anybody’s ever gonna watch this.”
Adam Scott, who portrayed Mark Scout added,
“I remember like a month and a half after we started airing, talking to Ben on the phone and we were just sort of like ‘can you believe people care now about these big things.”
Stiller chimed in, excited,
“Or just to hear like... I was saying like innie and outie for like two years. And nobody knew what I meant... when I first time I heard somebody say like his innie, I was like oh they’re saying it.”
