Blade Runner 2099 release window revealed

After being greenlighted in 2022 and going through several delays during production, Prime Video’s sci-fi series, Blade Runner 2099, is now ready to release in 2026. While there is no update about the release date yet, the confirmation of the series coming to the screen next year was welcome news for the fans of the franchise.

As revealed, Blade Runner 2099 will take us back to the same world that we left off in Dennis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049. The film focused on the life of K, a replicant, played by Ryan Gosling. It revolved around K's journey as he began to show his humane side, but he had started initially as a blade runner, who killed rogue replicants. The series will follow the same path and delve deeper into the character arcs and stories revolving around them.

More about Blade Runner 2099

The Prime Video series is created by Silka Luisa, who is also one of the executive producers with Ridley Scott and several others. Aside from Michelle Yeoh, Blade Runner 2099 will also star Hunter Schafer, Lewis Gribben, Maurizio Lombardi, and Tom Burke, among others.

While not much about the series has been revealed yet, Burke, in a Variety interview, shared that the series has the same aesthetic as the 1982 film, rather than the 2017 film. He said:

"There was a moment of just letting go… I was like, ‘OK, we’re really going out there with this.' (The series is) much closer to the aesthetic of the first movie than the second movie, that somewhat kind of Baroque, eclectic mix of cultures and time periods."

He further shared about how the series will explore more about humanity and what makes someone human, and when a human crosses the line between being human and not being one. He stated:

"It’s a lot to do with that thing quite intrinsic to the source material in the movie, which is actually what makes somebody human and what makes somebody not human. Or when does somebody cross some threshold."
